With JLPT coming up I was studying some onomatopoeia. Things like ぬくぬく or しんしん and I started using some flash card software but thought it would be cool if WaniKani had like a sub deck to supplement the main deck with it’s 60 levels.
Maybe it would be a simple thing, like 10 levels or something smaller in scale but it would be there if people want. There could maybe be other specialist decks in the future also. For example I noticed in level 15 we have the word トランプ which does not revolve around kanji. What if we had a separate specialist deck just for katakana words? Slang terms? Kansai dialect?
Anyway, I feel the amount of onomatopoeia to be too large and putting it into the main deck might detract from the kanji learning experience but it would be cool if maybe WaniKani had a neat little bonus decks on the side.
Bunpro.jp is a pretty great alternative for something like this if you’re not already using it for the (really excellent) grammar practice. They have pretty extensive vocabulary decks with lots of the gaps not here on WK- including more tailored ones (both official and fan curated) that feature all sorts of individual topics like onomatopoeia, dialect variations, daily situations (like grocery shopping or driving), terms used in specific media, etc.
It functions on a similar SRS system as WK and has tons of example sentences usually too. There’s even WK integration so you don’t have to relearn material already practiced here. If you’re not already using the site it’s very feature rich and gets high recommendations from me.
I do agree, though, that some sort of content deck system here on WK would be an awesome addition since I do prefer the flow, interface, and structure a little more. I had an idea like this in the past myself; Love letter to Wanikani - #4 by drackyslime
Seconding Bunpro’s decks as a great source for this sort of thing. I think learning 2k kanji is a substantial enough task that it makes sense for WK to solely focus on this without mission creep.
Only like 3% of people who start wani kani ever make it to the end. It’s an addition for barely any appreciable gain.
Lots of wide eyed excited newbies set big goals only to fall off Mt.Durtle when kanji practice feels less like watching dubbed anime and more like homework.
That said, getting back on Mt.Durtle is what separates the 3% from the 97%.

I do think that WaniKani would benefit from having more flexibility past the halfway mark or so. Start with a common trunk, then allow people to pick and chose what kind of kanji/vocab they want to learn next. That would be the best compromise IMO.
I kinda disagree. I wish wanikani had less katakana words and would focus more on kanji vocabulary especially now that Wanikani isn’t my only SRS. I’ve started using Bunpro to fill in those gaps
