WaniKani New Audio Update: Part 2

Thanks. I don’t have time today, but I’ll try to take a look soon. Hopefully it’s an easy fix.

Oh no… “WaniKani” doesn’t sound the same any more :frowning:

Thank you, I really appreciate it!

Your little script has been super helpful. Doing vocab reviews in 1x1 mode, reading first, and then spamming the audio button after reviewing the meaning is my favorite study method :sunglasses:

I do the same thing, but with autoplay

Nice :slightly_smiling_face: I misspoke, since I use autoplay too. I let it autoplay and then press and hold the audio button for a while.

+1 to this, I have auto play on because it helped reinforce readings - the old voice clips were great, but the new ones are loud and aggressive to the point of being super distracting. Really hoping for the option to switch back.

Can someone tell me, when doing a vocab review what does $.jStorage.get('currentItem').aud return from the dev console (use F12 to open it)?

Just did my first set of reviews with the new audio and I’m loving it! I didn’t realize how much having consistent audio could improve the experience, but man is it nice to have all the audio lined up like this. Great job with this one! Can’t wait to see future improvements!

+1 for me too. I really liked the female voice.

Cool, from that I expect it to be an easy fix. Thanks!

did anybody explained the point to record a new audio?

I have mixed feelings on the new audio

Pros: The dynamics (volume) seem more consistent in general, which is an improvement over the original audio

Cons: The new audio sounds tinny and distant compared to the old audio; it doesn’t have any low end. I also preferred the more casual/relaxed tone of the original audio.

I think the ideal solution would be to take the original audio and apply some dynamics compression to even the volume out

Whoa! I was so use to the old male voice, the new voice sounds like a Texan Japanese Yeehaw :+1:

Overall I think the new audio is great. There have been a few that actually startled me as I was used to the female voice or the more gentile male voice. Being exposed to different ones is probably a good thing, right?

Who decided Angry Old Man was better audio than the others? Maybe have the new and old both available?

I appreciated the previous mixture of female / male voice readings. A new male voice sounds aggressive at times; like he is going to jam a COUGH DROP down your throat. The male voice used for HORSE MEAT sounds more pleasant. LOL. Would be nice to have option to toggle old voice readings especially since the new files seem 100% male.

We also have new female audio, which we plan on rolling out as an option. If you are savvy with the API v2 The complete set has been available there for a while. You can preview it there.
