Here’s my daughter. Chip off the old block. I don’t know why she’s wearing the Che Guevara beret here.

I know that everyone has a different way of speaking and I’m not here to bash the great work you guys have been doing. But, here goes…

I have the feeling that the new male voice doesn’t always match the pitch accents shown on OJAD’s Suzuki kun prosody tutor and the script that shows you pitch accent patterns.
The old female voice seems to follow them more closely.

While the female voice sounded a bit too melodious , the new guy sounds much more forceful.

A good example is 掛かる which is 中高, but the guy sounds more like it’s 頭だか because of the forceful explody first morae.

It sounds accurate to me. :man_shrugging:

Okay, so I was just snooping around vocab, when i found Polygami
https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/一夫多妻 but the sound sound kinda weird. Its supposed to be ipputasai (right?) but it sounds like bipputasai. Am I crazy or are you hearing it too??

You’re right, I’m definitely hearing the “b” at the beginning. Weird.

I guess I need to work on my listening a bit more haha.

As someone who’s recorded audio, it’s possible that he was too close to the mic/the mic is sensitive and it caught him opening up his lips with sound before actually starting with the い…

(Having not heard that word yet myself… Okay now listening to it, I sort-of heard that that first time, then didn’t hear it, then went back-and-forth between hearing it or not for the next 3-4 listens… So I agree with my initial assessment above! I also get the feeling that it’s a mental trick - like an audio illusion (instead of an optical illusion).)

I don’t hear a b sound… it sounds correct to me.

I listened on my phone the other day, and it clearly sounded like い. However, on my cheap laptop I can definitely hear noise at the beginning that makes it sound like び. So I think it could be a speaker quality issue.

That said, I’m listening to it again on my phone, and it’s strange… the first time it sounds like び. Then every time after it sounds like い. Then if I refresh the page, it sounds like び once again, before sounding like い again every time after that. It consistently sounds like び exactly once every time I refresh.

On my iPhone it does sound more like い, but on my MacBook Pro which has excellent speakers, it still sounds like び no matter how many times and play it. And using headphones with my iPhone, it sounds like び. :man_shrugging:

That’s too bad isn’t it, I guess I’ll have to learn Japanese the old fashioned way, like the pioneers of yore.

Hey , it’s me again lol
I’m having trouble with the new male voice again.
今 and 居間 sound very similar with the new voice and I’m just hearing 頭高 which would be appropriate for 今, but not for 居間 which is 尾高. You can even find this pairing as an audio example on the Japanese pitch accent page on Wikipedia and it sounds like the old voice.

To me it sounds like “Yanny”.

I agree for this one. The new audio for 居間 just sounds like 今 but raised half an octave.
