Reset done, I’d been on level 18 for 2 years and forgot too much (though remembered quite a lot). Time for a fresh star and not rushing to do lessons.
Since 宝 was moved from level 33 to level 4, its vocabs now only have one example sentence, not three like other level 4 vocabs. Can the WK team remedy this, @anon20839864?
Just one small thing that may be a bit confusing about the Yurt radical is that the 包 (Wrap) radical is also called ‘Yurt’ in some dictionaries.
What dictionaries?
All set! 宝, 宝石, 宝くじ, and 国宝 should have 3 context sentences now.
Oh, okay, there is a word for yurt that can be written with that kanji. The way it was worded made it sound like 包 (as a radical) is called “yurt” in some capacity, somewhere. As far as I know, it’s not considered a radical anywhere but here.
EDIT: And I’ll ask my girlfriend in a bit, but I would put money on her having no idea what that パオ word is when written 包.
EDIT2: Yes, she knows ゲル, another word you’ll see in the dictionary for “yurt,” but not パオ or how to write パオ in kanji. My hunch is it’s safe to ignore that, unless you’re studying Mongolian culture through a Chinese lens, in Japanese.
“Ger” is the Mongolian word. “Yurt” is Turkish.
Making the new 喿 radical mean syrup is kind of brilliant, but now I’m disappointed that the kanji doesn’t actually mean that. (It means “chirping of birds”. Also it’s not even used as a kanji.)
I miss nailbat.
I think 国宝 is new, but I was wondering, do Japanese people really call Nic Cage 国宝? Because that’s great if true.
It’s not new, just moved to a lower level. And, no, they don’t.
Oh I see. Darn, that would have been some fun trivia. Oh well.
By chance, do you know if they moved it from a lower level to a higher level in the past? I remember seeing the Nic Cage joke when I first started WK but now it’s resurfaced as a new item for me . Or else I’ll have to accept that I’m living in the matrix forums
I hate to sound ignorant but why is Nic Cage listed as a synonym for National Treasure? What am I not getting?
It’s just a joke. It’s always been there, mind, not just as a result of the overhaul.
Thanks. One more WK mystery solved!
This probably has been asked but this thread is near 1000…why are the lessons under “radicals” tab showing the new overhaul meaning even after changing my changing my settings to “Yes: Display Old Mnemonic”?
There’s no option to make radicals show their old meanings in the general system, you can just continue to use the mnemonics on the item pages for kanji and vocab.
