Thanks for all of your hard work, Kristen. ^^
If you can come up with a better mnemonic for all of the せい words, email it to us! (hello@wanikani.com) Just because we couldn’t come up with something, doesn’t mean you can’t. But remember, it has to work for all of them and make sense.
I’ll make it my WaniKani life’s mission!
Maybe use seize as a starting point.
I just realized that I have no idea what those mnemonics mentioning Hard Gay are about
Question: do I now have to start learning how to spell menmon… nmeno… memno… dammit I can’t spell it!
Just use this mnemonic to remember mnemonic:
Memory Needs Every Method Of Nurturing Its Capacity
The pronunciation isn’t quite right. My self-made mnemonics all involve the other radicals say ing something (to match the pronunciation, if not the spelling), though it’s not the most visual thing ever, and it needs to be customized to pretty much every kanji which makes it a pain. But thank you for the idea! I might get a thread going a little later.
Also, I just want to take a second to say that I am generally very happy with a massive update! And that WK is such a responsive, evolving product where it’s so easy to connect directly with the developers and provide feedback could you imagine Apple running this way?
Cool, well, I guess I have every confidence now
To be fair, I stole that from wikipedia, but I’d still like to say you should believe in me.
I know, but I bet a lot of users don’t know who Hard Gay is and skim through the text instead. Is that any better?
I understand your point, and also don’t really like Hard Gay. Still, it always ends up being the ones I remember the most, because it’s “sigh, Hard Gay again???”.
If we’re spitballing ideas, how about:
Light saber
Sabertooth tiger
Lifesaver (candy OR flotation device)
Sailboat
Seitan (the tasty, high-protein wheat gluten food! Bonus points for matching spelling)
A saint
Thoughts:
Sailboat: too much potential for confusion with ‘boat’
Seitan: never heard of it - I might be unusual in that regard but if not it won’t make for a great universal mnemonic
Saint: doesn’t have quite the same drawn out sound as the others, to my ear
Lifesaver: I think this might be a bit too abstract, though perhaps that makes it usefully flexible
I like lightsaber and sabre-tooth tiger best, out of those suggestions ^^ a sabre-tooth tiger feels like it has a little more potential for memorable mnemonics? Too many swords involved already…
Why not Satan?
I also like saber tooth tiger by the way.
So, I no longer need to learn references I don’t understand? Hitchhikers, Lord Of The Rings, etc? So long Ent, Sauren, etc. I never knew what you were.
Cool, thanks very much guys You have been a portal to japanese understanding and I thank you!
If Hard Gay is staying, so am I.
Oh nice. Guess I can go back to reading the mnemonics now.
I can just see the tales we’ll be able to tell the newbies someday…
