WaniKani Content Additions: Wednesday August 9th - Wednesday September 20th 2023

Regarding order of words in Japanese dictionaries: The 広辞苑 koujien ( wikipedia, “regarded as the most authoritative dictionary of Japanese, and newspaper editorials frequently cite its definitions” ) seems to use a " historical emphasis, meaning that verbs are listed in their classical forms, and definitions of words are listed in order of historical usage (oldest meanings first) rather than being listed in order of frequency." Kojien So, I imagine that perhaps other dictionaries may use also different criteria than frequency usage when ordering words.

Hey cool, I’ve been saying WK should have 繋 and 揃 since 2020, so I’m glad to see them finally.

And 炒 is a solid addition. I’m also a bit surprised 問う, 立場, and 去る weren’t already on the list.

Hi everyone! We’ve just published the first batch of additions, which are:

  • Level 2: 田んぼ (たんぼ) - Rice Paddy
  • Level 5: 上手い (うまい) - Good At
  • Level 7: 正月 (しょうがつ) - New Year
  • Level 10: 教わる (おそわる) - To Learn Something From Someone
  • Level 14: (ぎょう) - Line of Text
  • Level 16: 悪化 (あっか) - Deterioration
  • Level 25: 現役 (げんえき) - Actively Working

You should see the ones from your level or below in your lessons now, or very soon…

FYI, there are some updates to the coming up changes. I’ve updated the original post accordingly!

We revised the primary definition of 代金 to be “cost,” while keeping “price” as a secondary definition. We included a note clarifying that it does not refer to cost as an expense, or price as a monetary value. 代金 is commonly used in transactional contexts, and we found “cost” to be a more versatile and suitable interpretation in such contexts.

There will be some movements in addition to the new subject additions.

Movements

  • Level 44: 缶 (radical) - moving down to level 13
  • Level 44: 缶 (kanji) - moving down to level 13
  • Level 44: 空き缶 - moving down to level 13
  • Level 44: 缶ビール - moving down to level 13

生ビール (なまびーる) - Draft Beer

Why is なまビール marked as a wrong answer?

This should be fixed now. Thanks for letting us know!

I see there is another beer related vocab (presumably canned beer) so I’d check that one as well. It’s not unlocked for me yet since it’s only just taught me the radical for “can”.

Thanks! 缶ビール has the hiragana + katakana combination as an accepted answer, so you should be good to go (once the item is unlocked for you) :+1:

…Aaand, this week’s batch has been published :tada:

My favorite from this batch is 疑う (we had fun coming up with the mnemonic)
Enjoy!

I don’t remember what I wrote but I imagined a fat kid is “it” in a game of tag - he’s the tagger. So you taunt him.

“ooo! tagger! う!たが! I doubt you can catch me!!”

Glad to see 疑う. My JLT used it in conversation enough for me to look it up and I was surprised to see an old burned kanji I should have known :stuck_out_tongue:

The more useful words and kanji on wanikani the better. I already learned most of these new additions on my own and from immersing, but nothing helps me solidify them better than wanikani’s intervals and gamification. Often wish I could take problem words/kanji and add them here myself when I keep seeing them but can’t remember them well.

Seeing recent mistakes is nice. My recent mistakes are taking a big amount of space though.

Perhaps a “…more” button would be nice on the Recent Mistakes component. Maybe it should only show the first 10-15 and then the rest needs to be manually expanded.

Also it really would be awesome to be able to add your own items to WaniKani. Maybe that’s something third-party apps could handle. Would be a lot of fun.

Loving the content additions btw! Keep it up, and please also address the Reviews endpoint being down for the last 4 months.

Please consider adding 撃 as a visually similar kanji to 繋 (surely I’m not the only one thinking that they look a bit similar?)

Added, thanks! :+1:

Is there not yet a way to get rid of kana vocab yet? Or any script that removes them? If I want to add these new kanji vocab, I can’t without having kana mixed into my reviews. (I tried a few times to get new lessons without any new kana vocab, but I think there are just too many. Odds are not in my favor ^^; )

The new batch has been published :white_check_mark: Enjoy! :tada:

On the same note, I also think that 繋 and 緊 look somewhat similar.

漣 should be dealt with at some point. It doesn’t have any words, just the kanji, so either words should be added or it should be removed. I don’t think it’s very common, or at least I’ve never run into it, so it may be better to just remove it. I wonder what the logic was for it being added in the first place.
