WaniKani Content Additions: Ongoing from April 29, 2021

As far as the kanji are concerned, is there a particular overarching goal, like hitting N1 completion or filling out all the words within a certain frequency of usage?

Thank you

Could there also be gaming terminology added and onomatopoeia vocabulary as well?

those would mostly be hiragana and katakana words, they won’t be added, since there are none of those on the site yet. WK is for learning kanji, so it only has kanji vocabulary, which serves to help learning the kanji.
You will have to supplement WK vocabulary with hiragana and katakana words yourself anyways. One option is Torii, where you can filter WK words, or just add words you encounter to an SRS like Anki (which is what I do).

The goal is for learners to be able to read the majority of kanji vocabulary in a (nonspecialist) book at a Japanese bookstore :books::crossed_fingers:t2:

As already pointed out, we currently only teach kanji vocabulary, so this isn’t something we’re planning to add in the short term…

Thank you for the reply! I think that’s a good, pragmatic goal. In that case, roughly how many more kanji do you think will be added?

Oh ho, is this proof of further work being done to develop a general Japanese learning program? (Was its name EtoEto or something like that?)

Thanks for the new vocab an kanjis!
I am curious (although not really concerned yet since I am only level 7):
Do people who reach lvl 60 have to resubscribe for 6 months each time there are new additions in order to burn the few new items? or is there some kind of ‘veteran’ fee at lvl 60?

I believe subscribing costs the exact same no matter what level you are. It’s been suggested many times that WK should give permanent membership to people who reach level 60, however people could abuse this to cheat their way to level 60 within less than a year and then reset and complete WK normally - so they could pay for just 1 year, yet get lifetime.

A solution could be giving lifetime to people who reach level 60, but taking it away if they reset.

I don’t know if it’s something that happens every year, but in 2019 December I got a mail, that I can buy lifetime for $60 as I am level 60.

(I reset since than to lvl 40 and now I’m working back my way.)

TBH it requires a huge commitment and I wouldn’t see many users abuse the system like that.

Well, you can always automate it.
But I wouldn’t want to wait for a year to start learning though.

@Mods I have a question about the new context sentences you’re making. Will they have a focus on presenting the usage of the vocab, especially for verbs?

For example,

今日私が面接した男はすごく馬鹿な奴で、オリンピックは三年毎に開催されるって言ってたよ。
The man I interviewed today was so stupid that he said the Olympics are held every three years.

Is a great sentence and I can understand the meaning well, but it’s difficult to pick up how to use 面接(めんせつ)する as a verb. Like if I am using it as a main verb, how do I know which particle the interviewee takes? It could be を、に、と, but I wouldn’t know from this sentence. Will/are you considering showcasing usage in this manner with your new context sentences?

I understand that WK’s stated goal is to help learners be able to read kanji in context, but the inclusion of する verbs and some other content belays hints of interest in a more rounded goal.

We only have a handful of kanji currently lined up, but we have a long list of possible additions to assess, plus a few we’re likely to hide. So I’m afraid I can’t put a number on it at the moment

You’re going to get me in trouble with the crabigator with questions like that  We’re always working on improving and adding to WaniKani, but I can’t give specific details about longer term plans because they have a habit of changing!

The best thing is to email our support team on hello@wanikani.com for more details about this

Yes, we are trying to improve context sentences so that they help you understand how to use the vocabulary better, and this is part of it!

Haha, I’ll try to turn off my analysis powers when reading your responses then

Wonderful! I’m so glad to hear that!

Oh, that’s a pity. I thought only some obscure vocab items would have been hidden :sob:

This week’s additions have just been added to the pile:

Kanji

  • Level 23: (かゆ) - itchy
  • Level 33: (へ) - flatulence

Vocabulary

  • Level 23: 痒い (かゆい) - itchy
  • Level 33: (へ) - flatulence
  • Level 33: 屁理屈 (へりくつ) - illogical argument
  • Level 45: 苛む (さいなむ) - to torment
  • Level 51: 煎る (いる) - to roast

The original post has also been updated with a list of the additions planned for the next few weeks, plus the items that we’re planning to move or hide. We’re going to do this gradually over time to allow for feedback, and to avoid messing up everyone’s lessons and reviews as much as possible!

That’s the plan! It’s just that if some kanji is used only in obscure vocabulary, it makes sense to hide that too. To give you an idea of the scale, though, we’re only considering three kanji, and they’re all above level 55.

What happens to the hidden words if we have them in progress or burned?

I have a content suggestion: WK has the names of four of the five fingers (親指、人差し指、中指、小指), why not add 薬指 to finish off the set?

They only come out at full moon? It might just be a ploy to keep you here longer
