Even though for me kanji is the most fun part of the language, I can see why natives wouldn’t like them much. Kana is simply faster. Kanji get absurdly complicated at times and then it’s no longer a shortcut, it’s more of maintaining form just for the sake of maintaining form. I wonder what kind of person would write 綺麗 or even 可愛い with kanji in a casual handwritten letter.
Just a bit. I learnt hiragana in the space of a week, and katakana took me another week. That was about a decade ago, and I’m still working on kanji. ![]()
Indeed, but in some ways, that’s the point: you might not do it in a handwritten letter, but computers allow you to write literally any kanji you can pronounce, to the point where the most recent update to the Joyo Kanji list added a bunch of kanji that are in common usage but are really annoying to write by hand (like 熊).

That’s such a weird feeling, like I’m being gaslighted or something.

And yes, to be sure, I’m not complaining about kanji in the least. I love kanji, in fact they were one of the things that made me curious about Japanese in the first place. If anything, as I said, I’m a bit disappointed when things aren’t written in kanji even though they could be. ![]()
Japanese learners on the other hand… especially given that kanji isn’t going away!
