I have heard this word quite a bit and have now learned it here in wanikani but to my surprise, it means “correct”. I hear stuff similar to “はい、ただしい…” followed by a correction very often and thought that it meant “however”, but apparently I was wrong? Can this word be used as however’

You might have misheard ただし (written in kanji as 但し). Without the long い sound.
A sound could get lengthened because the person is just thinking out loud or emphasizing things though.

Oh, you’re a lifesaver, thank you! I thought that since 正しい meant “correct”, it might be used to literally correct someone, but now that I think about it, whenever I heard the word 但し none of the sounds had been lengthened. Thank you once again!
