I think in that’s case it’s 編み – as in 三つ編み
The sound of Frieren’s hair being turned into 三つ編み by Fern
Also, Fern is currently not in the mood to say “there there” – she is angry with Frieren for leaving some food behind, so Fern is being passive-aggressive by turning Frieren’s hair into 三つ編み、which she knows Frieren doesn’t like.
Which is why Stark, who has already seen Fern doing this, says that it’s the braided hair of anger, which puzzles Denken, who obvioulsy doesn’t know Fern and Frieren as much as Stark does

Well, I certainly can read without furigana… For example, there is no furigana in Final Fantasy or Hollow Knight, or Unreal Life (which was the first game I managed to finish in Japanese), but I still do feel more comfortable with furigana.
For most of the words I encounter – I do remember the readings, but it often takes a moment or two to remember it. With furigana – I don’t have to wait. Also, furigana really helps in case of unknown kanji, which I still do sometimes encounter.
So, while no longer a necessity, furigana is certainly a useful thing to have
