Surely “to lower yourself” would be a fair synonym for this?

It’s valid in some contexts, but you’re not always talking about yourself. In some contexts, you’re talking about something else getting lower, in which case “yourself” isn’t a valid translation.
Edit: Actually, “to lower yourself” is a transitive verb use, so its translation to Japanese would be more like 自分を下げる。
