The radicals inside of a radical

Is there a way to check or view which radicals make up a radical? it’s not too difficult for me to recognize the majority of them, but there’s a couple radicals that i struggled with, and i can probably trace their components if i went back and checked previous levels, but is there a way to just go to a radical and see what its components are?

The radicals within a radical are not tracked in an official fashion by Wanikani. But if you go read the meaning of a radical you may find the inner radicals listed there.

Yeaah thats a bit unfortunate, do you think its important to be able to differentiate all the radicals inside of a radical or even a kanji? even if you already know meaning/reading?

No it is not important IMHO to distinguish the radicals within a radical. Most radicals do not subdivide into inner radicals. For those that do I can make do with the division made in the meaning of the radical;

Within a kanji the radicals are well distinguished by Wanikani, so this is not a problem.

Thank you! this reassures me a little more lol, i can instantly recognize a lot of the kanjis right now but i don’t think of the radicals inside of them as much

Yeah, I brought this up with the mods a couple of months ago, and the response was basically “yeah, the system isn’t really set up to do that”.

When a radical is obviously comprised of a bunch of other radicals (like, for example call), it’ll generally mention, but not highlight, the component radicals in the mnemonic, but yeah, it doesn’t link to them or anything. Though it won’t do that if the radical is also a kanji you’ve previously learnt.

Yeah i noticed that in some kanjis in the early levels too, I wish it would highlight the radicals, in call for example, sword and mouth, but i can also see that it could lead to some confusion
