The context would take too long to explain so to cut to the chase, if you wanted to ask someone in Japanese if they were afraid of something, what would the difference be between:
（僕は）○○が怖いです/（君は）○○が怖いですか？
and saying
（僕は）○○を恐れている/（君は）○○を恐れている
Can one only be used for certain kinds of fears?

At least one that comes to mind is that 恐れる is more formal/serious than 怖い.
Like if you heard 恐れるな as opposed to 怖がらないで.
