I use this one (that is, the built-in plugin in the Android Flaming Durtles app) every time I want to write a kanji on paper when I’m in my Japanese class.
Not sure how it would look like on a widget, but it would definitely be useful on the kanji page.
I’m famous for breaking my promises, but my 24 hour forecast says we’ll have a 24 hour forecast widget up within the next 24 hours ![]()
That’s a positive response, thank you. I think the removal of the images (even though they are rather well drawn) and making the widgets more information dense would be all it would take to resolve the pain points.
Sorry, no undo buttons in our future.
There’s a long history and a lot of opinions on that, but my stance is that we humans are generally exceptionally bad at regulating things like that without any bias, so it’s better not to have that option.
That said, I’m glad there are scripts out there that do that, and I’m glad they are just inconvenient enough to make it a pain to set them up that only those who really want it will go through the trouble of doing it. It’s just the right amount of friction, I think.
If we ever introduce them (don’t take this as me saying we will — I doubt we will), I think we’d make them exist in very limited quantities, and make them exceptionally difficult to earn. Or, start doing micro transactions for them. Which, admittedly, has almost everything to do with trolling people (so, we probably would never do that as well, and I’ll just continue to fantasize about it)
There is not, but I could see that being fun to have.
I’d love something like this too! I used to use this script, but it no longer works. Here’s what it looked like on each page @koichi :
Don’t want to set any expectations. Definitely was an April Fools joke / reference ![]()
Actually, yeah — this use case is one of the legitimate ones for answer undo.
Answer checking and validation is a really odd thing. Traditionally, there have only been a few ways to do it. And, at some point you could put an inordinate amount of time into making it better / or each item better, for less and less result.
But I’ve been thinking lately — I wonder if we could run incorrect answers through one of the AI apis and get back an interpretation of someone’s intention when they put in an answer. That would be a way to separate incorrect answers into a couple buckets. When they are probably incorrect, we could just mark it incorrect and offer no mercy as we do now. But, if it can confidently detect spelling errors and intention of a correct answer, we could possibly mark it correct, or ask them to try typing it again if confidence is off and the answer is a “pretty close” misspelling that’s outside of our normal allowances. And, we could also have it check answers that are totally off from our correct answers lists, and come back with a suggestion on whether or not it was actually correct but not in our answer list (that’d be the use case you’re describing!).
Until recently, I don’t think that would have been possible, but it’s technology that does exist now. Would have to figure out how to set it up so it’s pretty consistently correct about incorrect answers, though.
Anyways, just a barf of what I was thinking, not something we’re actively working on at the moment or anything. On a list somewhere, though.

BRING BACK THE HOVER FEATURE THAT WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM US, AND MY SOUL IS YOURS
and I might add a kiss on the cheek too
After a few days getting used to the interface, that’s the only issue I have now tbh. I could even get away with the extra click (although it is easily fixable I guess) to be able to see the progress on each kanji / level..
New Widget idea! A “Pace-tracker” to see how fast / set a pace / see if you are on track
. When could be the expected level up at this pace, etc. (insert cool illustration of a durtle running on a treadmill)
I would actually use that a lot!

An inbuilt undo button might be the only thing powerful enough to make me change my name to ilovethislanguage
As someone who will abuse the feature to the point of destroying my learning experience if this feature comes out, I am kinda glad they draw a line here… Pro tip: I reload my browser (without skipping to next kanji) if I ever make a spelling mistake, and it resets it (and keeps the session’s progress).
I use the Double-Check script, which allows me to hit backspace for undos
seeing all these 1000+ days studied widgets makes me wonder if one day, when the first person makes it to five decimal points of study, will that widget break? I’m looking forward to when we find out.
I originally did want to set it so that the illustration changes when you surpass the previous period. But, limited time, one artist, etc., and all that.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean about “adjusted based on the timeframe of the widget” though. Could you give me an example?
Can’t wait, I’ll start drawing stuff now. Time to dust the spiderwebs off my Apple pencil
my 24 hour forecast tells me that a 24 hour review forecast is coming soon. Separate widget, though. I do have it noted about expanding it / keeping that state saved within the current reviews forecast widget, however.
Some options around layouts would be nice (and editing vs replacing widgets). Noted down revert options just now too, thank you, and good luck with your reset!
This should make theming pretty easy to implement
Indeed, this is something I have heard as well ![]()
Stop it! No spoilers! (also known as public promises that will surely be broken)
Do you do this generally in Lessons? Or in your Reviews?
Or just more generally when you’re writing kanji?
We are pretty decidedly reading-focused. But, definitely not our end goal. To use your Japanese you have to be able to write, speak, (listen, too). So, writing (and stroke order) is definitely something that’s important to me long term, but less important to the app right now.
That said, putting stroke order (and a few other things) into the item info pages would be fine, I think. Those pages are something I want to look at some point soon (ish?).
