Hello,
Really hate to be this person, but I still want to give my two cents, because all of the enthusiastic positive replies will give a very skewed picture if the others decide to bite their tongue.
As a person sensitive to stimuli who likes very minimalist UIs, for me this is a downgrade. Of course, customization is always great, and I did now remove the items I do not normally look at, so that’s a plus. But for the items I do look at (mostly “level progress”, “review forecast” and “item spread”), I’m sorry to say that they are all worse off.
Generally speaking, the old UI was more subdued in terms of contrast/borders of things, and I find the sharper borders uglier: I guess that’s a personal aesthetic preference.
Specifically, for the review forecast, I now have to click to see the breakdown of today’s reviews. (And the green bars look cluttered to me: there is no unit underneath, so my eye does not use them and I still need to parse the numbers on the right.)
For the level progress, I now have to click and scroll to see how far I am with this level’s specific kanji. (And as others have said, there is no more information on hover, but I guess this was already noted.)
For the item spread, I don’t have to click, but the breakdown into a small matrix of small numbers makes it much harder for my eye to quickly see how many items are in “apprentice”.
In the old UI I could see everything I care about in a glance, and it looked great too: I have been praising WaniKani to people in the past as an example of an amazing app/UI. (Still is an amazing app.
) I feel like the new UI tries to squeeze information in much smaller spaces in order to fit a widget model.
Sorry again, I know you put a lot of effort into it! (I am a developer myself.) I guess if I don’t have to click through anymore to see those things I mentioned above, that would go a long way for me.
EDIT: I realized the green bars in the review forecast were there before… my bad. But my eyes had a much easier time ignoring them with the softer contrast, increased spacing, and lack of brackets around the number to the right.
