The Intermediate Manga Club (IMC) // Reading now: ハクメイとミコチ // Reading next: 幸せのマチ

Waaah, Arakawa Hiromu’s works! \o/
I tried Gin no saji, just few pages, it definitely has A LOT of agriculture words and not enough magic for me, so I switched to Yomi no tsugai (and it’s a banger!!!). And I saw reaaally nice reviews for Hyakyshow kizoku too, so I want to return to both mangas someday when my vocabulary is not so lacking.

I think I’m gonna need ten votes in the poll…

@Akashelia Do we want to tag a mod to make the OP a wiki so you don’t have to do all the updating work?

I was planning on nominating FMA if the acceptable genres skewed that way, I’ve been working through Vol. 1 and I’d love to read with a group. But there are also so many good nominations already! ^–^

Same haha, I think this club can have a long a prosper life based on the current nominations!

I don’t mind so far but yes I guess it’s unavoidable in the long run! Thanks for the thought!
I’ll tag them now, and if you see any improvement that can be made in the first post I guess go for it :+1:

Summoning @Mods ! Can you make the first post a wiki?

Okay, there are actually WAY too many that I’m interested in here :joy: this could become a problem

I had planned on nominating it after we had the first poll :joy: FMA doesn’t seem to lack interest at least. But yeah, there are already so many other nominations… I kind of want to focus on the manga I already own.
How far into the first volume did you get?

Oh I’ve never heard of Hyakushou Kizoku! I know Silver Spoon’s based on Arakawa’s experiences growing up on a dairy farm, but it’s neat that she also made an actual autobiography manga too

And I agree with y’all, there’s so many amazing nominations! idk how I’m going to vote, but at least I know I’ll be happy with basically anything we read! I have some others I’d like to nominate, but I’ll hold off for now since we have so many nominations already

Neither have I, and today I also learnt that it was turned into an anime last year, with a second season to come this year. (Four-minute episodes, though, so it’s not exactly a sweeping epic. :stuck_out_tongue: )

IMC all killer no filler

First manga: An epic fantasy tale full of action and magic.
Second manga: Cows are cool. :cow2:

I love it.

I don’t think you need to worry too much about acceptable genres here - the voting will take care of that. As long as it sounds like something you can see yourself reading with a book club, it’s probably “acceptable” enough.

i think we had a discouragement of fantasy stuff in lower-level clubs because most learners generally start with everyday vocab which lends itself to more daily-life settings (and frankly scifi/fantasy takes a lot of vocab groundwork), but i think it’s fine up here

I guess we should probably update the guidelines here then, since they’ve been copied from other clubs and include the discouragement of sci-fi/fantasy.

Makes sense to me to remove that. Intermediate is where I’d expect to step out of the everyday conversations anyway, might as well throw some fantasy and sci-fi into the mix

It’s a shame so many of these manga have bad digital quality on Kindle. The one nomination is so old that Amazon doesn’t even let you add the sample to your account, even though it is available to purchase digitally. How odd!

Does anyone have experience with the manga ランド? It’s insanely long for a manga, which makes me a bit reluctant to nominate it (especially since I haven’t read it and don’t know if it’s good). Especially since the current Natively level is 31 (granted, one user), so a little on the harder end for this club.

Really happy I happened to stumble onto this thread, always down for more manga (even if my schedule and workload says I shouldn’t lol)

Woah this looks really good! Was put on the ‘Most Dangerous Manga’ list, which might not mean much since SpyxFamily was also put there haha.

It looks interesting so I can probably take a quick preview look at it to see if its appropriate/manageable?

Sounds good! I think it’ll partly come down to whether the club is fine reading 34 pages every week for a 10-11 week schedule.

I’m currently at about 35% while I’ve been reading off and on. It was a little intimidating at first because it starts with dense dialogue bubbles and some religion-specific language to help set the scene, but it quickly smoothed out and became very easy to follow. Arakawa really knows how to build a plot :star_struck: I will continue devouring FMA whether we ever read it here or not lol

Thanks for posting that! I just read the first chapter in English to see how I like it, and I put it on my Natively wishlist before the chapter was over

Personal Opinion

Not much to say here since I haven’t read the series. It’s a fairly popular josei manga and involves some otaku stuff. I just happen to own the first three volumes and thought it might be more fun to read with a group.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Probably very “different” from other nominations
  • Otaku culture (good or bad depending on your perspective I guess)

Cons

  • Wouldn’t be surprised if the characters and/or story are weird based on the preview I read
