💎 The Beginner Final Fantasy Club (BFFC)

Also apparently the Switch version lets you select the language from the game’s config menu, so you don’t have to change your console’s language to Japanese if you don’t want to:

As far as I can tell the exact same version is available for exactly the same price from Steam:

It also supports Japanese.

I’ll probably join! Waiting til the time to see for sure how I feel cause I’ll no doubt have too much going on; my reaction to finishing Fata Morgana was to start 2 more games :innocent: . But I’ll probably make it work. Played 6 for the first time kind of recently (in Japanese!) so I might want to sit that one out, but that’s a little ways off. Have never played 1-5 at all, so good chance to finally get to that.

Oh actually you can change the font type (pixelated or modern) from the config menu. That’s actually great, if you find the pixelated kanji too difficult to read you can switch to the full resolution version. And if like me you find the high-res font out of place you can switch to the old-school version:

Honestly I’m pretty impressed with this version so far, it’s very fully featured. Seems like a good version to target as a default (although I think I will play the original Famicom version myself, but maybe I can do both side-by-side).

Definitely interested in Final Fantasy, whatever game ends up being voted. I’m not sure how I’ll have it when the club starts but I’ll join if I can. I’ll keep the thread on tracking.

Some of them on Steam don’t have Japanese support to my knowledge, like FF7, but most do, and for example FF9 doesn’t support it officially but the Memoria mod (which improves graphics significantly and other stuff like QoL or FPS) does let you play in Japanese. The old version of FF6 on Steam didn’t support it officially either but the language was actually in the files and you could enable it by modifying a value in one of them; a non-issue now with the pixel remasters.

I intend to start with I: it’s the shortest, it’s available everywhere for relatively cheap (and in Japanese) and seems like a good starting point overall.

After that we’ll discuss how we want to proceed I suppose.

My gut feeling is that it’s going to be quite low when compared to the amount of characters in video games:

E.g. the current BBC manga

Has 1500 words to read over 10ish weeks so assuming 2.5 characters per word (maybe a bit high if you’re just thinking kanji only words but kana words can be longer) is about 400 characters per week.

Which is like 30 text boxes in the RPGs I’ve played recently.

Though on the other hand ひとりぼっちの〇〇生活 had nearly double the text density and had the same schedule which is probably a sign that there is some flexibility on volume.

Yeah sorry, I assumed prematurely, you did mention starting with the first. I suppose they vary widely in difficulty too so it makes sense that for a beginner club the easiest ones are picked first.

Awesome! I think I’ll play on my Switch for once, time to step a bit away from the computer :open_mouth:

Here to register interest. I’ve been wanting to play the Final Fantasy games for a while so probably a good excuse to do so. Personally as far as scheduling goes I’m fine as long as it’s not something like doing the entire game in a week

I’ll just mention that the Pixel Remaster games I-VI as well as VII, VIII, IX, X and XII for the Switch are on sale right now in most European countries, the US and Australia – at least according to the website Deku Deals that can be used to track game sales on Switch and other platforms.

Here’s the UK page with the search option for “Final Fantasy” for example:

Most if not all of these games seem to be discounted on Steam too.

If you wanted to buy some FF games in general or for this club, now would be a good time. :slightly_smiling_face:

Wow amazing, I was just wondering if there were ever sales and how to know about them. Thanks

I know that I already bought some of the games on the play store too a long time ago. I’ll have to check which language they support.

Yeah that’s pretty light. The good thing with games is that we can modulate the amount of text to some extent since there are many optional conversations.

For instance I think week 1 could be just discovering the game mechanics and talking to the various NPCs in the town and castle, which is a significant amount of text overall but most of it is completely optional so people who feel a bit overwhelmed can focus on the main story and ignore the randos.

Turns out the WK book club ability to summon sales goes beyond bookwalker

Yes, pretty amazing timing. I bought the bundle, now we have to play until FFVI :grimacing:

That version is so much nicer than the original Famicom on basically every single aspect. I’m usually skeptical of these “remasters” because they tend to ruin the esthetics and the vibe of the original to some extent, but I’m really impressed by how well made it is.

Just dealing with all the menus, gears, spell etc is incredibly better. The battles are faster paced too. And there’s more dialogue!

I’m intrigued, not played any FF in Japanese yet. Just gotta be a little cautious to not join too many clubs again

I’ve finished III (DS) and XIII and two of the Crystal Chronicles. I’ve got IV and V on PS1 and X-2 on PS2, don’t see any point in doubling up so I’d probably skip those (unless buying the Japanese versions is cheaper to get a bundle or something), or maybe play along despite it not being for language.

Ooh, good timing setting this up right during the steam sale to get people on board. I just got some Final Fantasy games this weekend because I wanted to fill out my set with what I didn’t have. I didn’t get the pixel remasters because I still think the upscaling looks a bit weird compared to the famicom or super famicom and gameboy versions. I may be interested in trying the gameboy versions through a phone emulator just for the convenience of portability. I’m currently trying to do VI in English this way and it’s fun but I was a little burned out the last time I tried it because I had just done IV and V. I enjoyed following the trails in the sky threads but didn’t keep up with the reading. With these being shorter and not as densely dialogued out it should be an easier point to work on. I hope whatever version I play has a decent amount of kanji. It’s a challenge to read all hiragana. I want to try finishing VI in English first but I should be available sometime in a month or two for that.

Yep. Definitely what happened. Completely calculated :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I agree, I’m a bit of a purist for that stuff, but as I mentioned above the quality of life improvements are really nice and I think generally it looks ok on the small Switch screen. I think on PC I prefer to play the retro ones with proper CRT shaders (like in the screenshots I put in the top post).
