The 🤼 プロレス thread! Learning Japanese through pro wrestling

That’s alright! I’ll aim to get the last pre-Wrestle-Princess translation draft finished by the morning of Oct 5 at the absolute latest, and if there’s anything after that point, like a super late press conference or match posters or something, I’ll ask another friend for help with answering my questions .

I’m expecting the WP translation itself to be over 9k characters, so there’s a strong chance I won’t even finish it during that time that you’re gone anyway, haha.

Enjoy your trip!

I did finish translating the September 16 show, which was Rika’s hometown show which like six or seven people on the roster couldn’t make it to because they were sick… The wrestlers who were there sure did still talk a lot, though .

Aniki stepped in to help fill in for the absences, facing Toga. A nice fun match! Toga is an aspiring powerhouse, so it’s fun to see her get the chance to square up against someone like Ryo Mizunami.

Anik’s comments:

Mizunami: “A lot of people had to miss this show, so I was called upon to participate on short notice. First of all, I hope the absent wrestlers are able to return as soon as possible.”

I was a bit confused by the first chunk of this: “そして、私にできることといえば…やっぱり、長野の松本で…私は今日初めて長野で試合しました.”

“And as for what I can do… Well, today’s match in Matsumoto, Nagano was my first match in Nagano. I thought I should fight with everything I have so that I can make today the best day for the crowd who came today, so I fought in the ring with that in mind. And Toga. She debuted half a year ago, and she has a large body, and there are great expectations for her future; she’s a young wrestler with nothing but potential. That elbow strike of hers really rocked me, and it reverberated in my heart, too. I hope she’ll take all of the feelings she felt in her chest today, and she’ll work even harder from here. After she has gotten stronger, I want to do this one more time. Let’s fight again then. Thank you very much for today!”

Toga’s comments:

Toga: “I had the opportunity to face Mizunami-san six months after my debut. I was really left with the impression that I couldn’t do anything. No matter how strong my elbow strikes were, I couldn’t make a dent. I was constantly getting knocked down, and I wasn’t really able to fire back.”

These sentences were a bit tricky: “でも、いままで感じたことないくらい試合中に悔しくて、試合中に泣くくらい悔しくて、でも…その痛いから泣けてくるっていうのもあったり、あとは頑張っても倒せないって悔しさもあって.”

“I was so frustrated during the match, more frustrated than I’d ever felt before. I was so frustrated that I cried during the match. I also cried due to the pain, and I was frustrated that I couldn’t take her down no matter how hard I tried. I still have a whole lot of growing to do. But I also had more fun than I’d ever felt before.”

The middle part of this was a bit tough: “次闘う時はもっと倒せるようにっていうのはもちろんのこと、今回の試合では後悔というか、少しは昔より、1個前の試合より成長できたかなって思えたらいいなと思います.”

“Of course I want to be able to bring her down the next time we fight. I also hope that in the next match I regret less than I did in the past, that I can show that I’ve grown since our previous match.”

Next match with comments was Itoh vs Shino, which is an interesting return match for Itoh, considering it pitted her against TJPW’s biggest underdog babyface, so the crowd was on Shino’s side, haha.

Itoh’s comments:

Itoh: “I’m back! It was my first time being away from Japan for two months. It was really tough. I thought I was going to die. I was in the U.S. from July 14. I arrived on July 14, and then I took a taxi.”

I wasn’t entirely sure about car accident language here, so I wanted to double-check that I translated this part accurately: “乗ってたら、急に玉突き事故が起きちゃったの。ビックリして!(身振り手振りで)普通に乗ってたの。そしたら後ろからバーン!ってなって。もう死んだと思ったね、アメリカに来た瞬間.”

“As I was riding in it, a pileup happened out of the blue. I was so surprised!” (gesturing) “I was riding like normal. Then ‘BAM’ from behind! I thought I was already dead, the moment I arrived in America. It was really scary. But, well, I had fun. Today I faced the rookie Shino-chan, so I didn’t show even 10% of what I can do, but it was a lot of fun, so I’m glad.”

(How did the Japanese fans react to seeing you for the first time in a while?)

The “やっぱりアレですね” part of her response was a bit confusing, and the very last part here: “まぁまぁでしたね。やっぱりアレですね。素直でちゃんと頑張ってる子が支持されるんだなって思ってたんです、やりながら.”

“It was so-so. So that’s how it is. I thought, as I was wrestling, that they’d support an honest, hardworking girl. They didn’t cheer for me at all, but that actually made me stronger. I’m going to keep going my own way from here. I’m not going to flatter them.”

I also wasn’t quite sure about the translation for that last line: “オレは媚びねえ.”

Shino’s comments:

Shino: “Thank you for the Matsumoto show. With Itoh-san making her return from overseas, the original plan for the match was different, but my placement on the card got moved around and I was chosen to face her. I thought it was fate, though I didn’t want Itoh-san to think that I’d been wasting my time in Japan… But I was no match for her. That’s how it is, and I’m all beat up. When I fought Itoh-san before, it was my first time wrestling, and when I saw Itoh-san’s face that time, I wanted to go home. Today, I didn’t want to go home. I faced Itoh-san with the determination to last long enough to mess up her hair, but… It was my own hair that got messed up, and Itoh-san didn’t have a hair out of place. I realized just how far I still have left to go.”

This part seemed a bit odd to me, though I guess maybe she’s saying that while Itoh’s away, she wants to do her best to grow even while knowing that she probably won’t be able to grow enough in the time that Itoh’s gone? “また海外に行かれちゃうってことなので、そんなに人はすぐに成長しないとは思いますけど、ちょっとずつ頑張って.”

“Since she’ll be going abroad again, I don’t think people grow that quickly, but little by little, I’m going to do my best. I want to get the chance to face Itoh-san again. Thank you very much.”

Yuki Aino and Aja Kong faced Shoko and Moka in a match that made me want a Shoko vs Aja singles match, haha. It was cute to see Aja and Yuki do the Oyasumi Express in Raku’s stead :smiling_face_with_tear:.

Comments from the Raku fan club side:

Aja: (holding up a Raku towel with Aino) “This was supposed to be a trio, but Raku-chan wasn’t feeling well, so it became just a regular tag match. But it’s alright. Even though Raku-chan wasn’t there, we did (the Oyasumi Express) as if she was with us. But it wasn’t easy to do it without Raku-chan, was it?”

Aino: “It wasn’t. But you led the way with the teamwork and such.”

Aja: “We did our best so that Raku-chan could see it done right. Come back to us next time, Raku-chan.”

Aino: “I want to do it (as a trio). Raku will be like our leader.”

Aja: “Yes, yes. The match was really interesting. Up until now, Moka has fought at my side a lot, but this was our first time facing off against each other. I thought she was very tenacious, probably because she has seen a lot from her vantage point beside me. I thought it was over after the backdrop, and I was surprised to see her kick out.”

Aino: “I was really surprised. I thought that was it. The way that Moka kept heading for Aja-san, she’s getting stronger and stronger.”

Aja: “That Shouken (thrust), too. I thought, ‘Thank god it’s just one.’ Up until now, I’ve seen her growth from the same side, but this time I saw it from the opposite corner. I think she’s going to grow more and more. I want her back on my side again.” (laughs) “No, no, in the other corner. Today there were a lot of roster members absent, but among the ones who were here, the wrestlers were so energetic and they worked hard. The audience might have missed them a bit, but on the other hand, the next time TJPW comes, they’ll have the full roster, so I think the audience will be able to see a new TJPW. I don’t know if I’ll be there, though.”

Aino: “You will! Aja-san, please come again.”

Aja: “I’d be happy to be invited. So, next time will be a different TJPW, and I hope you can save some fun for everyone next time.”

Shoko and Moka:

Nakajima: “I really felt Aja Kong’s power in this match. A lot of people were absent today, and Mizunami-san and Aja-san came. Though Aja-san was originally scheduled to come.”

The beginning of this was confusing to me: “なんかやっぱり、パワーに引っ張られてこっちも足りない人数を補うかのようにパワーを出して立ち向かってはいたんですけど、やっぱりアジャコングパワーはすごいってその一言です.”

“Her power led the way, and we demonstrated power of our own as we faced her as if to make up for having fewer people today, but in the end Aja Kong’s power was amazing, that’s all I have to say. Of course, Yuki was strong, too, and Moka also worked hard, but the match made me realize Aja-san’s power.”

Miyamoto: “This was my first time facing Aja-san. We’ve teamed together several times, but this was my first time facing her. While fighting her, I really felt how incredibly strong she was. I’m disappointed that I lost, but I want to get more and more powerful.”

The main event was Daydream vs Misao and Miyu! I totally didn’t notice this while actually watching, but from the post-match comments, it sounds like Miyu and Rika actually didn’t get the chance to fight, haha. Predictably (though I guess it didn’t go like that in the last show!), Rika got the big hometown victory.

Here’s the post-match:

Tatsumi: “I did it! Daydream was able to secure the win in Matsumoto, Nagano, my hometown! Our opponents were too strong, weren’t they?”

Miu: “Yes!”

Tatsumi: “I’m really relieved that we won. I was really looking forward to coming because today’s show was in my hometown. Thank you! There were a lot of wrestlers who couldn’t come today, but from the very first match, everyone worked hard, and some guests came, and I think they did their best… How was it, everyone?” (loud cheers) “If you had fun, that’s all I wanted. And today, actually… in six months, it’ll be ten years since I made my wrestling debut, and my mom came to see me for the first time. I don’t know what she thought, but…” (Rika’s mom in the audience says, “I’m relieved!”)

The transcript supplied me with this: “(客席の母から「よかったよー!」の声)”, but I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to translate the “よかったよー!”. I sometimes struggle to figure out if it’s expressing relief, or if she’s saying that she thought the match was good….

I wasn’t quite sure about Miu’s response: “すご(笑)。もう私、秒で分かって。明らかにうちわがすごい(爆笑)。すごい愛が溢れてて素敵です.”

Miu: “Amazing.” (laughs) “I knew within seconds. Obviously her family is amazing.” (laughing hard) “It’s so wonderful that there’s so much love there.”

Tatsumi: “My friends came to see us, and of course I’m very grateful to everyone who came today. Thank you very much! Well, I’d like to close with Daydream’s usual send-off, but how was it for you, Miu?”

Miu: “Nagano? Was it my first time…? Maybe, I dunno.”

Then she said: “山に来たことはあるかもしれないですけど、林間学校とかで.” Yomichan defined “林間学校” as “outdoors school”, but the definition made it sound more like a summer school, though I wasn’t super confident…

“I might have come to the mountains before, in summer school or something. There’s so much incredible nature here, and everyone is kind. I could really feel that Rika-san had grown up here, so it was fun.”

Tatsumi: “If the show was well-received, there may be a second or a third one, so if you liked it, please tell others about it. I look forward to seeing you again.”

Miu: “Next time, I want to come with everyone.”

Tatsumi: “Next time, we’ll bring the full roster, so please look forward to TJPW. Shall we close with the usual?”

They closed the show with: “TJPW will continue to do our best from here on out!”

Rika and Miu’s comments:

Tatsumi: “Nagano, I’m home! Well, the fate of the show was up in the air for a bit there, but I’m thankful to my mother for giving birth to a robust baby. All of the members who came were full of energy, and thank you so much to our guests, Aja Kong and Mizunami, for coming!”

Miu: “Nagano was gorgeous.”

Tatsumi: “Our match was able to happen, and I was able to win, so I’m really happy.”

Miu: “Yay! I was so surprised at how warm the atmosphere was, even though it was the first show. I hope we can come to Nagano with everyone next time.”

Tatsumi: “I want to come back with everyone.”

Miu: “I love Nagano.”

Tatsumi: “And someday, goodwill ambassador of Nagano… it’s quite the responsibility. I want to become the mascot girl for my favorite ramen shop, Tenho.”

Miu: “Please!”

I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to translate “アピール” in this: “これからも東京女子プロレスとテンホウと白昼夢と、いっぱいアピールしていきたいと思います!”

Tatsumi: “I want to keep doing lots of promotion for TJPW, Tenho, and Daydream! I’m looking forward to working with you.”

(The title match with the Impaler has been set)

“So it has. I never thought that I’d be doing a singles match with Impaler-chan. But they’re an opponent I wanted to fight one-on-one at some point, not to mention the fact that both of our belts are on the line. I think it’ll be a fight where I can’t yield even a single inch, so I hope to somehow win and become a double champion. I want to come back to Nagano with two championships.”

(Were you able to build up some energy?)

“I think I was able to gain some strength. Everyone gave me power. I’m so glad.”

Misao and Miyu:

Misao: “I lost. This is the sacred ground of Nagano, Matsumoto which brought into being the holy dragon that is Rika-san, right? I really wanted to pin Rika-san in Nagano Prefecture at all costs, but instead she pinned me, so that’s really disappointing. I can’t let it end like this, so the next time we have a show in Nagano, I’m definitely going to pin Rika-san.”

This line was tricky, haha: “この聖地でリカさんと…私に負けて新たなリカさんをここで誕生させるみたいなことをしたいので.”

“In this sacred place, with Rika-san… I want her to lose to me and then cause a new Rika-san to be born here. But even though I lost, this was the first time in a long time that Rika-san and I were able to face off… It’s frustrating. It would have been the best if I could have won.”

This next chunk of the exchange was tricky:

山下「やりすぎだったよ? 私、できてないもん、リカと」

Yamashita: “Wasn’t that overkill? I wasn’t able to face Rika.”

ミサヲ「ごめんなさい、そこは今日は独占リカさんで」

Misao: “Sorry, I hogged Rika-san for myself today.”

山下「私もやりたかったけどね」

Yamashita: “I also wanted to face her, though.”

ミサヲ「未詩実優で…それはどうしても私がピンを取りたかったから。しょうがないですね」

Misao: “MiuMiyu was… that was because I really wanted to get the pin. There was no other way.”

山下「まぁいいよ」

Yamashita: “Well, alright.”

Misao: “The next time we do it… Well, I don’t know if we’ll be on a team next time, but I’m going to pin her no matter what it takes. Even if the match is Yamashita vs Rika, I’ll ask (Yamashita) to go home.”

Yamashita: “You should be the one to go home in that case.”

Misao: “I look forward to working with you.”

Yamashita: “Next time, I want someone else besides Misao. Because she’ll monopolize her. I also want to come to Nagano again, and that character…”

Misao: “Arukuma-san. I still haven’t met him. I want to meet him! Let’s have Arukuma-san console us.”

Yamashita: “Yeah. Let’s have him console us. Let’s come to Nagano again.”

Misao: “Nagano was great, huh?”

Yamashita: “It was fun. Even though we lost.”

Misao: “We’ll definitely come back, so please wait for us.”

And that’s it for that show! Just two more left to go! I’ve made decent headway into the 9.18 show, so hopefully I’ll have that done by the end of September, and then will be able to get the final show done within the first few days of October .
