Learning Japanese through pro wrestling

Finished translating TJPW’s August 26 summer show! We’re finally almost at the September shows, haha.

The first match with comments was Rika vs Demonio Dos, which was some fun nonsense. I got spoiled for the spot with the bus, but it was still a lot of fun!

Rika’s comments:

Tatsumi: “Today my summer vacation comes completely to an end. Summer vacation… I also went to a fireworks display, and a summer festival. I saw some fireworks again today, and I made a new friend, so I think I was able to make it a very happy summer. Also, I forgot to declare it, but I intended to do today’s match as a title match. So this is V5. I’m going to make it V5! I want to have more and more title matches, so I’m going to defend it over and over again for the rest of my life. I want to do a lot more defenses.”

(You legitimately befriended him?)

“Yes. We’ve become good friends… I’m sure of it.”

(The bus didn’t move)

I think I understood this, but wasn’t totally sure exactly how the license situation works in Japan: “私、免許証がオートマ限定で。マニュアルだったんですよ、バスが。だし、この会場のことをあんまり詳しく存じてなくて。こんなに車も置いておけるなんて知らなかったので。ホントにまた路上プロレスとか機会があったら、大型の免許を取ろうと思います.”

“My drivers license is only for automatic vehicles. The bus was manual. Also, I didn’t know much about this venue. I didn’t know that you could just leave vehicles around like that. If I have the chance to do another rojo street wrestling show, I think I’m going to get my large vehicle license. I want to get revenge.”

The semi-main event had a stipulation where only summer items can be used, I believe. And they sure brought a lot of things into it, haha. The fireworks were fun, and the watermelons, and the ring ended up getting totally soaked.

Mizuki/Himawari:

Mizuki: “It’s summer!”

HIMAWARI: “Yay!”

Mizuki: “We’re the summer winners.”

I wasn’t quite sure about Mizuki’s line here: “もうこれからもまだ夏が続く…まぁまぁ夏は終わっていいかな.” And Himawari’s response: “終わっていいですね.”

“There’s still a bit of summer left to go… Well, I guess summer is over.” (laughs)

HIMAWARI: “I’m glad it’s over. I had a lot of fun.”

Mizuki: “It was fun! The watermelon was delicious.”

HIMAWARI: “Yes, it was.”

Mizuki: “It tasted like victory.”

(You went outside of the venue)

“I love that kind of thing. My partner was HIMAWARI-chan, and I didn’t really have that kind of impression of her, but she had a big smile on her face the whole time.”

HIMAWARI: (laughs)

Mizuki: “It felt good.”

HIMAWARI: “It was super fun. It has still only been half a year since I debuted, and yet I got to do something fun like this. I want to do more.”

I wasn’t sure about this line: “始まる前は『どうなるか不安ですー』とか言ってたのに、水風船投げまくっててビックリした.”

Mizuki: “Even though she was saying stuff like ‘I’m worried about how it’s going to go’ before it started, she was throwing water balloons with abandon, and it took me by surprise.” (laughs)

(She seems to have an aptitude for it?)

“She does.”

(You flew from the top of a truck?)

I wasn’t quite sure about a lot in this chunk: “初めてです。初めて…ってそういう表現? でも高いところからだったらどこからでも飛びたくなっちゃうんですけど。HIMAWARIちゃんがちょうどよくみんなをガッシャーンしてくれてたので、チャンスって思って。リング屋さんと仲良しなので、たぶん怒られないだろうなって思っていってしまいました(笑).”

“That was my first time. My first time… how does the expression go? If it’s high up, I’d want to jump off of it no matter what it is. HIMAWARI-chan had everyone in the right place for the impact, so I saw my chance. Since I’m good friends with the person who owns the ring, I thought I probably wouldn’t make anyone too angry.” (laughs)

(A wrestler from the previous match came in during your match)

“That surprised me! I heard ‘bang, bang, bang’ and when I saw him, it was like ‘absolutely not!’”

HIMAWARI: “That was ridiculous.”

Mizuki: “But I was able to beat them all, so I guess it was alright.”

Shoko/Pom:

Nakajima: “Damn them!”

Pom: “Yeah! Well…”

Nakajima: “What is it?”

Pom: “I have something I want to say to Shoko-san.”

Nakajima: “You shouldn’t do that. It’s not good to hit people in the head with a watermelon.”

This next bit was a bit tricky, especially Pom going from the “殴った人に” to “殴られた人にも” in her next response. I couldn’t quite figure that one out.

Pom: “Wait! Um, I think I might know who did it…”

Nakajima: “It wasn’t me.”

Pom: “I think I have an idea…”

Nakajima: “It wasn’t me.”

Pom: “Also, the soft vinyl kaiju? Those weren’t summer items, and they hurt a lot.”

Nakajima: “They’re totally summer! They used to show kaiju films at the theater during summer vacation, you know.”

I was a bit tripped up by Shoko’s response:

ぽむ「ちょっとハム太郎だけ見てたので」

Pom: “All I saw was Hamtaro.”

Nakajima: “They’d also do Hamtaro. Besides that, they’d also do triple features with films like Great Mazinger.”

Pom: “I don’t understand! I don’t know!”

Nakajima: “But you can’t hit people in the head with a watermelon!”

Pom: “It’s really not good to do! You get that, right, everyone? Did you take care and enjoy summer?”

Nakajima: “Did you?”

Pom: “It was all over the place, but maybe it was fun? It was good, right? If I keep talking, we’re just going to get complaints, so I’m gonna stop! It was fun, and that’s the end!”

I laughed at Shoko trying to justify the kaiju toys as summer items by saying she watched kaiju films at the theater in summer. I guess the WK film club is about to watch Shin Godzilla right at the end of summer, so maybe there’s something to her argument there…

The main event was… very wet, haha! They spilled like half of a kiddie pool in the ring in the semi-main, so the wrestlers who came on after them had to wrestle with a gigantic wet spot in the ring, which was pretty funny.

Yuki Aino, Raku, and Moka got the victory, and here’s what they said in-ring:

Aino: “Yay, I won!”

Miyamoto: “…I’m soaking wet.”

Aino: “Everyone, thank you for coming today in the midst of this heat! Some of you come all the time, and some of you are here for the first time today. Today we had some matches like the ones that we always have, that are typical TJPW, and we also had some that were a bit out of the box. There was a lot happening, but did you all have fun today?” (crowd cheers) “So, who enjoyed the TJPW summer?” (crowd cheers)

I wasn’t quite sure what she meant by this: “これからも東京女子を頼むぞって人ー?”

“Great! Are you going to keep counting on TJPW?” (crowd cheers) “Yay! Thank you so much for today!”

Aino/Raku/Moka’s comments start off with a pun that I’m still at a loss how to translate…. My best attempt for “お疲れサマー!” was “That’s enough summer!”, which isn’t great, or maybe you could do something with “aweSUMMER”? I couldn’t think of anything, haha. If we can’t figure out anything good, I’ll probably just write it as “OtsukareSUMMER” and explain the pun in a translator’s note.

Aino: “I started off with a bad pun. How was it? It feels kinda like today’s the end of summer, huh?”

Raku: “It’s the end, and the three of us were able to team up.”

Aino: “Yeah! I’m really happy.”

I wasn’t sure about this: “この夏、私けっこうさ.”

“This summer, it was quite alright. I lost a lot, but it was our first time at this super hot Hanamizuki Hall, and the three of us won. All’s well that ends well. I think our victory burned hotter than Hanamizuki Hall.”

Raku: “What do you mean?”

Aino: “Should I explain? …It’s hot, so I think my sopping wet gear is going to dry immediately.”

Raku: “Well… since summer is ending, what are we going to do?”

Aino: “What are we doing? Um… eating ice cream.”

Raku: “We’re going to eat ice cream!”

Aino: “Thank you very much!”

Miu/Suzume/Wakana’s comments were pretty straightforward, except for the fact that they independently discovered the same pun as the opposing team…

I wasn’t 100% on Suzume and Miu’s parts near the beginning here:

Miu: “Summer is over.”

Suzume: “I’m totally soaked… what on earth did they do in the previous match to make it like that?”

Miu: “I don’t get how that happened… When I stepped onto the mat, water splashed up. I really don’t know about all that, but we didn’t intend to get all wet…”

Suzume: “Yeah.”

The middle part of this gave me pause at first, but I think I got it? “すごいビショビショだったし、自分たちの暑さでも、汗でもビチョビチョだったし.”

Miu: “We got super, super soaked, and with how hot we were, we were also soaked with sweat. But, well, it was a good way to end the summer… Feels like ‘お疲れサマー’”.

Suzume: “Wow” (laughs)

Suzume: “Thank you very much.”

Miu: “For those of you who came today, please be mindful of heat stroke, and take salt. Have fun and get home safely.”

Suzume & Uehara: “お疲れサマー!”

And that’s it for that one! Fun show! I couldn’t resist stealing their pun and changing my WK forum status, haha.

Finally done with the August shows! I’m about to be 5 shows behind by the end of this weekend… :smiling_face_with_tear:
