The 🤼 プロレス thread! Learning Japanese through pro wrestling

Here’s part three of the Grand Princess translation!

The next match was Miu vs Rika for the International belt, and it was a blast! Two really fantastic Giant Swing sequences here, first with Rika’s very Rika-esque counter, haha, and then Miu countering the sleeper by transitioning into the Giant Swing. Absolutely blew my mind, honestly! I was rooting for Miu, but I’m not angry that Rika won; she deserves it.

In Rika’s post-match comments, I wasn’t quite sure how to translate several parts of the beginning: “未詩と白昼夢対決で、試合中は…いまもなんですけど、まだ何が何だかふわふわ浮ついてて。でもひとつ言えるのは、闘う前より今の方が知らなかった未詩に会えたなって。知らない白昼夢が見せられたのかなって感じてます。闘う前は白昼夢どうなるか…解散とか離れ離れになるのもしょうがないよなって、恨みっこなしでやるから.”

Tatsumi: “It was a Daydream confrontation with Miu. During the match… Even now, I’m a little light-headed and can’t tell up from down. But one thing I can say is that the Miu I faced is more of a stranger to me now than before we fought. I feel like it revealed a Daydream that I hadn’t known. Before the fight, I wondered what would happen to Daydream… I thought, ‘We’ll have no choice but to break up or split up, right? So let’s do it without hard feelings.’ But I ended up wanting to stay with Miu after all. I also want to have a new dream as Daydream. And from now on, since I won this belt from my strongest opponent, I’ll keep my head held high and push forward with confidence. Starting now, I want to spin a tale with Rika Tatsumi as the main character.”

(You achieved the Grand Slam)

“I had a strong desire to achieve this great feat, and I was able to make it happen. I want to face foreign wrestlers, of course, and also TJPW wrestlers… I won’t name any names, but I want to rack up defenses against any wrestlers I have the chance to fight.”

I was a bit confused by this part: “3つ、タッグもシングルももうひとつのシングルも、現物も手に入れていきたいです。三冠王です。”

“I want all three: the tag belts and a singles belt as well as another singles title, and I want to achieve the real thing. The Triple Crown.”

(Blooming out of season, is that something that would be achieved by taking all three?)

“…That was one of my goals, but I think blooming out of season would be if I win the white belt. That’s still unfulfilled.”

狂い咲き makes a return, haha. I’ll probably explain this one in a translator’s note again for the new followers. I went back and forth last time on whether I wanted to translate it “bloom out of season” or “bloom crazily”, so I might change my mind before I post this one. It seems to me like the “crazy” connotation is very much intended here, and I think leaving that out does it a disservice.

I also wasn’t quite sure that I correctly translated the “解散とか離れ離れになるのもしょうがない” part. It’s funny because when the actual match was happening, one of my friends commented that out of all of the tag team fights happening in the show, Daydream is the only one they think is actually falling apart. They said, “I kinda think they hate each other.” And I was like nah, I don’t think so," thinking that a breakup was in no way foreshadowed in any of the comments leading up to this, and then Rika just goes and says this, haha.

I think I got Miu’s comments?

Miu: “I lost to Rika-san… When she challenged, I was so confident that I could win this time for sure. In our last singles match, I was clearly not confident in myself. Two years have passed since then, and I didn’t challenge with the feeling of not wanting to lose now, but with the confidence that I could win. Facing the prospect of losing the belt as well… When I think about how the belt isn’t here anymore, I miss it.” (crying) “I miss it, but since it went to Rika-san, I think she’ll almost definitely show it various scenery. I want to enjoy that scenery while being at Rika-san’s side like always. On the other hand, having fought Rika-san like this again and lost, I think having that experience showed me some more unknown scenery. I’m going to do my best going forward, while also making it a goal to get a win from Rika-san someday.”

(You’ll be going to America without the belt)

“Ah…” (crying) “That’s right. I wanted to go to America with the belt… But I’m going to America for the first time, and I’m glad I’ll finally get to use my passport. I’m going to do my best to go to Disney and other places.”

(Has Daydream’s bond strengthened?)

“Yes. I want to beat Rika-san and fight her, but, well, it’s more fun to be next to her. I want to fight her, but right now I want to be at her side again, looking at the interesting scenery and laughing.”

The next match was the tag title match! I was rooting for Wasteland War Party (along with what appeared to be a good chunk of the Wrestle Universe chat), but I couldn’t complain about seeing Itoh and Miyu finally win the tag belts!

Their comments were shockingly pretty straightforward this time? It helped that I already translated their new catchphrase, haha.

Itoh: “They were really strong… Too strong. I almost gave up countless times. Truly, thank you Yamashita. If it had just been Itoh alone, I’d have lost for sure. You told me over and over, ‘do your best!’ ‘don’t give up!’. I really appreciate it.”

Yamashita: “Don’t say thanks. We’re a tag team; it’s what’s expected. But, Itoh! Thank you for being at my side.”

Itoh: “Of course!”

Yamashita: “I’m so happy!”

Itoh: “I won the tag belts for the first time!”

Yamashita: “We won the tag belts, these ones!”

Itoh: “I, Maki Itoh, thought I could never ever win the tag belts, until just a while ago.”

Yamashita: “I felt the same way.”

Itoh: “I could only think of myself, and I saw myself as a singles wrestler.”

Yamashita: “I was also like that.”

Itoh: “I don’t know how, but I have a tag belt now. Thank you, Yamashita!”

Yamashita: “Thank you, Itoh!”

Itoh: “You’re the best!”

Yamashita: “You’re even greater, truly.”

Itoh: “Alright, from here, our defense road begins.”

Yamashita: “It starts now.”

Itoh: “Yes!”

Yamashita: “But we were able to defeat those monsters Max and Heidi today, so we have nothing to fear anymore. From now on, I want to defend the belts in Japan, in the US, in the UK, all over the world.”

Itoh: “That monster was damn strong and fucking huge, and being able to beat them with my head really gave me a boost in confidence. Itoh’s head is world-class. I’m going to use headbutts more and more in my defenses after this.”

Yamashita: “I’m also going to improve my kicks.”

Itoh: “Yes!”

Yamashita!" More and more!"

I was a bit unsure with how hard to go with Itoh’s “あのクソ強い、クソでかいモンスターに伊藤の頭で勝てたっていうのですっごい自信になった”, but, well, considering how she talks in English…

Here’s part two. Itoh’s sentence here was a bit confusing: “なんだかんだね、伊藤月イチでこれからもアメリカに行く感じになるから.”

(If there’s an opportunity, will Itoh also travel to the U.S. to defend the belts?)

Itoh: “I feel like I’ll be going to the U.S. every month or so for something or other. So I think I’ll probably meet up with Yamashita, and then we’ll show each other how much we’ve both grown and defend our belts again.”

I also wasn’t 100% sure about this sentence of Miyu’s: “日本でももし、何かあれば私はいつでも飛んでくるし、逆に伊藤もなんかあればアメリカに飛んできてくれるでしょ.”

Yamashita: “I think defending them in America would be fun. If there’s something in Japan for me, I’ll always fly back, and conversely, if there’s something in America for Itoh, she’ll fly there.”

Itoh: “I’ll hop on a plane!”

Yamashita: “Even if we’re apart, we will…”

Itoh: “Yes, I would fly anywhere for you!”

Yamashita: “It’s the same for me!”

Itoh: “Alright!”

Yamashita: “Alright!”

Itoh: “I’ll go! Okay, everyone! Two people are… how did it go?”

Yamashita: “I forgot about this.”

Itoh: “Two people are better than one! If two, then—”

Yamashita: “One!”

Itoh: “No! ‘Two people are better than one! If two, then a hundredfold!’ When I say ‘One To’, please say ‘Million!’”

Yamashita: “Say it today! Correctly!”

I wasn’t quite sure how to translate Itoh’s “一生のお願いです” here:

Itoh: “I’ll go. Audience, please say it. It’s the one thing I’m asking for.”

Yamashita: “Just once.”

Itoh: "Just once! I’m begging you. Two people are better than one! If two, then a hundredfold! We are, One To—” (The media team does not react)

And Miyu’s sentence here: “もういい、帰ろう。話にならん。一生質問受けません.”

Yamashita: “That’s enough. We’re going home. I’m not talking. I won’t be taking any more questions!” (in English) “Fuck!”

There’s just the main event left to go! I kept having to stop myself from skipping ahead to it early, haha, but I left it until the end as an incentive to motivate me to keep working.
