Textbook or no?

I have to ask, have you tried book three or four. I completed the two first books when I started learning Japanese and loved them, but the Kanji implementation of book three and four have made them collect dust on my shelf without me trying them seriously out. I get confused when a Kanji compound vocab use on’yomi and not kunyomi since one of the Kanji can be written in hiragana.

Should I give them a new chance? (My grammar is still seriously lacking.)

I didn’t like book three that much because the exercises were less interesting and more repetitive. Also, I had already learned most of the grammar in that book from googling stuff I heard from anime. Since I didn’t care for book three I didn’t bother with book four.
