I’m making this study log at level 19 because I was wary of starting too many things at once when I started WK.
I’ve been a lifelong fan of anime and manga and when I was around 14 I begged my parents to let me study Japanese, but there just weren’t that many resources in Spanish (my first language) or they were quite expensive, and my English wasn’t as good as it is now. I got distracted by Korean in college and for years did some on-and-off studying until I got quite close to a TOPIK Level 3.
Cut to last December when I watched 10DANCE on Netflix and the Japanese bug bit me again, hard. I was like “wait a minute, i have quite a bit of japanese vocabulary floating around in my brain, i should do something with that”. It was a nice coincidence that I had been looking to get into classes of some sort in order to meet new people. Unfortunately I had a Very Big Project that I knew would take up most of my time until July, without time to go to school.
I started thinking about doing something in the meantime, to get a better footing before enrolling in class, and learning kanji sounded good. That’s when I found WK! My favorite thing about it is how it decides almost everything for me and forces me into a specific routine. With other apps too many things were left up to me and I didn’t have the time or the attention span to deal with it. Wanikani is super simple and I love that about it. It also gave me something brief to distract myself with every day while I was hard at work!
I started class two weeks ago and I’m super happy. I’m making new friends and I’m excited about learning grammar and practicing conversation.
I have a couple manga in Japanese and the other day I was able to read one of them from start to finish. It was Little Thunder’s Wakame & Wave & Infinity (わかめとなみとむげんのものがたり). It doesn’t have that much dialogue, and I was able to read about 85% of the kanji. Ofc I didn’t understand all the nuance of the dialogues, but I’m pretty sure I understood most of the story (very meta, recommended!). This made me quite proud and with kanji no longer being this huge, time-consuming obstacle, my next goals are:
- reach wk level 30
- try for the N4 next year
- read more manga! (the school has a sizeable collection and I want to ask if I can borrow them
) - have longer conversations with my japanese 10DANCE friends <3
I lo0oooOooooove languages, actually some Japanese words and kanjis have been easier to learn because they’re so similar to the Korean ones! I’m excited to keep getting better and to communicate better with the Japanese friends I have.
I’m not good with rigid schedules so I’ll post here with random updates whenever I remember.
