I like to write down brand new kanji just after leveling up, and study them along with the reading and anything else that helps me remember, for maybe 30 minutes total. I only do this at the very beginning of a level, after that I stick to SRS. I found in the first three or four levels I was missing a lot of the kanji (and/or readings) on the first review, and it was getting pretty frustrating – this gets me past that first review and I’m usually fine from there. I don’t study vocabulary at all – generally I can figure it out, the odd ones I just memorize.
