Prior to July I had been using my account infrequently for several years. I’ve recently started to work on my massive stack of reviews (it started around 1200 or so) and apprentices, (roughly 1000 right now) but it feels like I’m barely denting it with 60-70 percent accuracy. Should I try to reset down 5 or 10 levels or just keep grinding away at it?
I recently came back after a break and got back to zero. It’s doable and if you just do a hundred a day it’ll take a little over ten days (some of the apprentice items will come back faster than you get the pile down). A little every day beats trying to do everything at once.
It’s also okay to reset, I just personally haven’t done that because I think the srs will mostly correct itself as you run into the items again.
Good luck. You’re already halfway to 60 so you should be able to get through the rest if you keep at it.
Hi, thanks for the response. I’ve been doing at least 100 reviews a day for several weeks at this point. The real issue is the apprentices; whenever I finish a few hundred reviews they replenish by the next day. I’m making some progress, but it’s pretty rough.
If I am overwhelmed with the number of reviews, I use the vacation mode.
Do your 100 reviews then enable vacation mode. Next day disable vacation mode,
do your 100 reviews, then enable it again. This way, the reviews will be pushed back and the review pile will not grow.
Of course, you can’t add new items during this … but I never add new items, when I can’t finish the reviews.
When you are done with the review pile, I personally wouldn’t add any new items once the number of apprentice items hits around 120 again.
If you reorder the reviews with a userscript such that the ones who are the least overdue come first, you can prevent the issue that by the time you get to the end of the apprentice pile you have forgotten the start again.
Having worked back from 1000+ reviews several times here are the things I’ve done that worked.

Order your reviews by level. This means generally you don’t see the majority of your apprentice items till later as they will usually be in the later levels. And it means when apprentice items do come back they will be at the top of the pack and you can deal with them as they come.

Don’t do a set number each day. Get your review pile down to a set number each day. So if you’re at 1500 reviews try to get down to 1450 the next day and 1400 the next day and so on. Some days you will be actually doing 50 reviews some days you might be doing over a 100 but no matter what you are making progress.

Start slow. The more you do in a day the more apprentice items will come rushing back later. You can easily do about 100 in a day but that gets a lot harder when you’re getting +50 items back a day. I’d start by getting your pile down by 50 each day. And then if your getting through it and not seeing too much trouble you can start to speed up.

You’re probably already doing this but don’t take more lessons. That includes after you get back to 0 reviews. There’s still a week or so after you get to the bottom where you will still be getting a high volume of reviews. Wait till your incoming reviews die down and then you can jump back in to new things.
The rest is having a bunch of free time and following through. But having done it 3 different times, it is very much not impossible
I think everyone has some good ideas on getting you back on track. I would recommend finding a number for apprentice items you do not want to go over. For example, I want to keep it mine as close to, or under, 100. I have a hard limit at 150. For me, I base this number on the fact that I do 1 level per 8 days. If you go slower, I think you could have more apprentice items. You just have to get a feel of what works for you, but I think there is definitely a limit to apprentice items otherwise you are just constantly in a revolving door of too may reviews.
