Oh hello I’m so sorry I totally missed replying to your message here because I thought I already did.

Oh wow, this sounds really fun and like a nice community gathering! I love hearing about other cultures, so please don’t apologise for sharing hahaha. Thanks so much for sharing about it!!
sameeee!!! people in my city especially take cricket very very seriously. I think it’s similar to how Americans feel about basketball/football! If you come here, you’ll see so many young children playing cricket in the streets, stadiums and schools! It’s cute, but I don’t care much about it lol
I just finished re-reading Ch12 and Ch13! Ch 12 was a bit easier this time (because of the re-read).
I tried translating a few sentences to make sure I got them right. If mitrac or anyone else can confirm that they understood the same from the sentence, I’d be super grateful!
Ch 13 general thoughts
I’ve translated only one sentence for now, but I’ll add a comment with other sentences if and when I get to it!
I loved how the movements were drawn in this chapter! So immaculate. It was so cool to see Sakuragi in a trance after watching Rukawa play. Sakuragi was so fixated on Rukawa losing that by the end of the game, he was just dumbfounded by Rukawa’s style haha.
Is our captain pushing everyone’s limit so he can happily hand over the team to 2nd and 1st years before he leaves the club?
P73
なにいってんだおまえら - What are you guys saying? [This sentence is easy, but I wanted to mention it for the entire context]
このくらいやってもらわんとこっちも張り合いがないわい
このくらい - This much
やってもらわん - To do
と - if
こっちも - even this or this too
張り合い - competition
がないわい - not (?)
Translation: If we don’t even do this much, we won’t even have any competition (?)
love your replies, thanks I almost finished Ch 12 last night, so I’ll put in my thoughts today/tomorrow on that one and do my first pass of 13 this weekend and then look at your thoughts there. So glad you thought it was easier after the Ch 13 reread. Last night I was like, sheesh, I haven’t had so many lookups since around Ch 8. But I guess it makes sense, first match and we get some interesting new アヤコ / はるこ dynamic…
OK so you probably know this, but since I nearly missed it in the artwork I wanted to highlight the start because it’s so well drawn and then when you look at the whole sequence it’s so cool.
The game is started with a jump ball, so here you see the non player throw up the ball
Such a cool perspective from the guy who threw the ball. Amazingly drawn.
That sequence with all the other panels in the book was just too cool. Overall it’s so impressive how well Inoue gets across the action. I took his artwork for granted in the beginning, but now that I’ve seen more, a lot of manga looks so static in comparison now.
I thought the side drama with Ayako and Haruko was funny. I like Ayako
LLol this shot reminds me how much it can hurt if someone throws the ball at you harder than your expecting!
I don’t know if you were looking for an answer or another opinion (and if not just ignore me lol), but here’s my take!
Spot on with the first part
Then the main part of the sentence:
このくらい - “This (Much)”
やってもらわんと - “If they didn’t do (to us)” - The first part やって is to do, which leads into もらわん which in more textbook terms would be もらわない, which is the verb もらう. Meaning this “doing” is coming from the other team. And the negative plus と adding the meaning of “if they didn’t do this”, which you got
こっちも - Us too - It literally means “this/here too” like you said, but in this case, since we were talking about the other team before now we’re switching to talking about our team
張り合い - Competition/Motivation
ないわい - Won’t (be) - Basically adds the meeting that there’s not 張り合い
SO, I ain’t a translator but bear with me
Translation: If they didn’t give us this then we wouldn’t have any competition.
I actually had to reread all of the context and then stare at the sentence for a while before fully getting it haha. But having the context in mind, No12 was saying the opponent has incredible rebound and break through power, kind of implying that it’s really difficult. Therefore with that in mind, Akagi is basically saying (I think): If they don’t come at us with this strength/competition, if they don’t challenge us like this we won’t have any competition/be able to give it our all.
You did a great job breaking that down! And I hope a few of my insights were of some help. Sentences like this are always difficult with all of the slang/shortening, and then the very context heavy/vague way of talking about things haha
Yes!!! I love all that detail, he makes the matches so lively and clear to follow. Since it flows so well sometimes I read it fast, but then I have to remind myself to slow down and properly appreciate the art haha
Ohhhh that makes so much more sense actually!! Yeah the vague context along with several slangs was my limit of sorts ahaha
Thank you so much for re-reading the context and helping me out. This was super helpful
omg i relate to this! i either stare way too much and struggle to move on to the next page or i need to remind myself to go back to appreciate the art hahaha
What a chapter! My brain was mush the last couple weeks but it finally cleared and I really enjoyed the game.
Sameee!! Love that scene, a bit mirroring how impressed the captain is.
So glad you asked about p 73 that was the same one I couldn’t get on my own. @TheNerdyNova your breakdown and thoughts there were so helpful thanks a million!
The other scene I liked was how clueless Haruko is about the rivalry between Sakuragi and Rukawa. And Ayako in the background shaking her head like it’s you!
yeah this was adorable TT and I love how extroverted Ayako is hahah, I’m used to seeing so many reserved female characters in manga - so Ayako’s character is refreshing
Yesssss! She is so fun. With kogure she is turning into my favourite character.
I looked back through the game art, the way he gets the movement across is just so awesome!! Totally loving it game shots have such a precise feel, you know exactly who just moved and where the ball came from or is going. The net after the shots amazing. And then it makes it so funny to switch to the comic style for some scenes
Ch 14 thoughts.
Aaaah the game continues! I was not expecting this.
I love Ayako’s deadpan reactions.
And of course Sakuragi doesn’t pass… I’m so curious how he learns teamwork…
Then he totally biffs it on captain’s head. Oops!
It’s total chaos and coach is stroking his chin happily. I want inside his head!
And on to volume two! (Although I’m reading these in Shinsouban edition, and I’m still on book one). But that doesn’t matter.
Story thoughts, Ch.10-11
Yay for Hanamichi for figuring out that he had to go back and leave the fight with the bullies. The fight between him and Captain at the end of chapter 9 got ready bad (that dropkick!, p. 194), but apparently Captain pushed the right buttons to get through to him.
Echoing the previous sentiments in this thread that it’s really nice to be introduced to all the other characters. It seems like a great cast. I also was intrigued by the coach. I’m honestly quite torn on Haruko-chan. She’s gushing over Rukawa, while at the same time cheering and encouraging Hanamichi each chance she gets. For the moment, it seems like she’s just really dense/innocent, and truly thinks that Hanamichi is doing this because he likes the game.
On to chapter 12 and the first game! “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”
Language things
p.324 しゃーす!!
I’ve seen this before, but couldn’t figure out the meaning. Any suggestions?
p.171 チワス
I had no idea what was meant here, initially. Some googling turned up that it’s a short form of こんにちは. Never would have figured that out by myself. :*)
lol, that makes 3 of us reading 3 different volumes now (page numbers past Ch 9 RIP).
Ch 10-11 reply
I was too… meanwhile I’ve switched my allegiance from Haruko to Ayako
Can’t wait to see your reactions to the game…
language
either I skipped that or I need to see it in context to remember. which chapter? (and what page does your chapter start on so I can figure out where this is in mine…)
yes, that one I only got because in book 1 there is the チュース greeting (I think when Sakuragi first comes into the basketball club room?) and my friend found something ( think I might have quoted it in the vol 1 discussion doc we linked) that explained it and it’s like one step further along that abstract chain of transformations… sheesh!
Oh, right. The pages number are done by actual volume and change between editions.
This one is right near the end of chapter 11, top of the page. It’s a panel of the 1年 and 23年 students facing off.
I found it and… must have totally skipped that at the time. I must have put it in my bucket of “I’m not even going to bother looking you up” which I normally only relegate to sound effects, but sometimes to things the boys yell
I found this which seems to say it’s a contraction of します! which would make sense. Like a kind of “let’s do this!”
Just as the post mitrac linked said, it’s just a very very shortened form of お願いします. A search on google breaks it down this way: 「『しゃす』は、『お願いします』のあいさつが、『お願いしゃす』→『しゃす』のように短縮・変形した言葉です。」
I think this meaning also makes sense because they say it when about to start a practice match right?
There are a few words that get very shortened down like this, and (at least to me) sound young adult or bro-like/casual speech, if that makes sense haha. One similar thing I had fun talking ab with Japanese friends is 「あざっす!」meaning 「ありがとうございます!」something you might find yourself saying a lot, so in some situations people speak so fast it quite literally turns into 「あざっす」
Of course thanks for throwing that in, maybe I’ll have a chance of getting it now if I come across it! I’m going to start tagging these in my head as bro-speech
that reminds me of the British “ait” = you alright = how are you doing (Am) which as an American native speaker was impenetrable. And it took me years of hearing “ta” and not recognising it as even a word before I realised it meant thanks. So far the best one that most (northern) Germans don’t seem to realise they do, occasionally a sharp intake of breath = yes.
Giving myself a small reward today for finally overcoming my slump and finishing the 14th chapter ahahha
ch 14
Yesss she’s honestly such a fav now!
I can’t with Sakuragi. It’s like he always unintentionally vents out his anger on the captain lmao - the way he poked to make sure the captain wasn’t dead was hilarious
me toooo!!! what is he thinking???
I’ve seen this reel that makes fun of Japanese shortened words, and the shortening depends on how close you are to the person I think? So it starts from 「ありがとうございます!」and ends with 「すす!」as a joke. It’s hilarious, but I can’t find it aaaargh
way to gooo! Here is your Ch 14 commemorative basketball, hehe
Ch 14
Inoue is a master at going from majestic sport portrayal to slapstick
whut do we ever stand a chance lmao. This shortening business with friends must be some kind of overreaction to having to be so polite with miles long polite speech in other situations lol
Ooh, I thought of one more and then I’ll stop lol
When I was on a trip, we were at a store in Shimokitazawa. There were at least like 3 or 4 staff workers walking around reorganizing the clothes and stuff, and every now and then they would all go 「っせえぇぇ」and I was a little confused but also wasn’t paying much attention. But THEN, I realized they were saying 「いらしゃいませ」 But I swear to you literally all you heard was a cacophony of 「せえぇぇぇ」
