Slam Dunk 🏀 Vol. 2 (Ch 10-18)

You have arrived :star_struck:

I finished chapters 13 and 14. On to book 2 (in my Shinsouban edition)! That brings me up to chapter 24, after which I’ll decide whether to buy the rest of the series.

Short thoughts on ch. 13 and 14

Great chapters, I can only echo the admiration for the mangaka’s way of drawing action and basketball moves in particular!

One of the funniest moments for me was maybe in the first page of chapter 14, where we see Haruko-san with hearts drawn for eyes in awe of Rukawa’s slam dunk. And then Hanamichi actually comments on them: め 目がハートになっているう!!. Like it’s something that actually physically happened in the world.

Over these chapters, I think we got to see more of the characters as we’ve come to know them: Haruko naive and obtuse, Ayako level-headed and with some biting comments, and Hanamichi giving it 110%, getting some begrudging praise for having actual skills (even thought the Captain doesn’t voice it this time), and messing it up in the end.

Love those observations, nice

So there’s three of us now at the same spot! I just started ch 15 yesterday which sounds like good timing.

Hello!!! It’s been a while

I finally finished the 15th chapter, everybody clap. Funny that I put it off for so long, but when I finally had the energy, time, and inclination to read, I ended up enjoying it! It was a hard one though.

ch 15

Page 117-118: It’s hilarious how everyone, including the teacher, was so invested in Rukawa’s sleeping habits, so much so that even the teacher gave up on arguing with him. :joy:

Ohhh also, we have a love rival now :eyes: and some chance for our MC to decide what he truly wants to do!

:star_struck: woot woot!
I haven’t read all of it but I had some queasiness maybe you can help me with. I meant to put images in but maybe I’ll get to that later it’s fiddly to take pictures

Ch 15 thoughts, first three scenes

First scene, I love Sakuragi’s attitude

Second scene with Akagi
On the second page of that scene, is that Kogure? And the conversation going on, I had a hard time figuring out who was talking. To me it seems first the girls are commenting that he managed a tough exercise, and then (top left of second page of that scene) asked how he’s getting on being captain. But later (bottom right) it’s the teacher talking?

Third scene with Rukawa
What? At the end, is he beating up the teacher?

ch 15, first 3 scenes

Sakuragi is cool in a really funny way, sometimes it’s adorable hehe

As for the second scene, yep!! that’s Kogure. On the first page, the students (in general) talk about the basketball club with the captain, and Kogure is just thinking to himself. On the second page, the bell rings (indicating that the class has started), and the teacher asks Akagi to translate an English sentence. I’m not sure if I’m missing something, but I don’t see the discussion about how he’s getting on being a captain? :eyes: Could you send the pic when you’re free?

In the third scene, the teacher is pissed and beats up Rukawa cause he’s sleeping. :joy:

Your comments are so helpful thanks!
I finally got over my hump and am back into it, finished Ch 15, phew! I think I understood about half of that in the end and got the gist of the rest. This was the toughest chapter for me since the beginning - the context kept switching, and I just didn’t have the heart to figure out all the slang

ch 15

Second scene

At the top left it looks to me like someone is asking Akagi how he’s getting on as captain (or maybe more like, “you must be getting used to it right”)
And then bottom right someone is saying there are rumours there is a good first year student and the team is going to do well? It doesn’t seem to be such an important conversation, but the slang makes it so tough to even get the gist!

Third scene is so confusing who is beating up who in the end :see_no_evil: someone says stop Rukawa!

OK I kept going. I love the fifth scene where Sakuragi is like, it’ll be your fault I’m late :joy: after he was 3 hours late already :innocent:

OK the ending - what? Did I get that right Aota’s big plan is to get Sakuragi to join them?

Yippee! Good job :tada:

Trying to answer Ch 15 questions

Yup! I hadn’t heard 板(いた)につく before, but yeah the dictionary says it’s “To get used to, to be accustomed to”

The box in the bottom right all sounds like classmates yes, mainly because the first and second are asking a question, and the second uses Akagi’s name/addresses him. If it helps at all here’s my rough translation of the three sentences.

“But this year’s basketball club seems like it’ll do well, right”
“Yeah yeah, the whole school is talking about it (rumors) Akagi!”
“It sounds like a great first year entered too right?”

But yeah you absolutely got the gist correct! But I’m not sure which slang or part exactly is causing trouble. Maybe the じゃない&じゃねー? Have you encountered that before in casual speech? I won’t go on a whole rant explanation if you already understand that part

Hahaha, dude I feel you, random dialogue bubbles are the worst haha

HAHA BUT OH MY GOSH, I THINK HE ACTUALLY IS ATTACKING THE TEACHER
Because right before this panel, Rukawa says he won’t forgive or let slide people who interrupt his sleep :joy: So I think the 「何をするか!!」Is the teacher, so that means the one doing the するing is Rukawa! (I guess it’s up to our imagination exactly what he did tho lol), the 「流川が寝ぼけてるぞ!!」is probably a classmate, and it means Rukawa is still half asleep/not really awake so he probably doesn’t totally realize what he’s doing, which probably means he is attacking (or at least readying an attack on) the teacher  Hence, deserving the 「流川を止めろー!!」

HEHEEHHEE, funny red hair boy :innocent:

Yes indeed :+1: He says especially because Sakuragi seems very wild and intense, he thinks he would be great on the team. And then when the kids who tried to make him join all come back beat up, that just makes him want Sakuragi to join more  But it will show up more in the next chapter or two, so it’ll probably make more sense. But your deductions were spot on :+1:

But great job finishing that chapter, both of you! Dialogue chapters are always harder/take longer to read than BBALL :bangbang: chapters haha

ah thanks for stopping by, that was a massive help! I think what was so tough in this chapter was that I didn’t always know who was talking, and since I didn’t know where it was going, then there were just too many possibilities to keep track of. Maybe now I’ll peak into the next chapter as well when I’m struggling this much to reduce the uncertainty.

Ch 15 responses

Akagi scene:

ah, you know what, I think I was trying to parse that as conversation and not just as 3 separate comments from classmates. That makes so much more sense now, thanks! I think my trouble looking back on this one wasn’t the slang but not knowing the subject or the speaker, lol, so I just felt really uncertain. Those じゃない&じゃねー are also so annoying! I generally get them, but they don’t help when I’m lost with the subject/speaker issue

Yeah, I wanted to interpret it that way but I couldn’t believe it. We first see the teacher have a go at Rukawa, so I almost passed over that panel. I guess your key point is it’s up to our imagination!

ah ace, thanks! I was out of it by then, lol, so I really appreciate you going into that detail! my understanding was getting pretty hazy by then so I was running on instincts for gists :joy:

Normally I’m up for more digging into the details, but this time felt like more of a wall. You and @prath saved me on this chapter! Sometimes it is a relief to see some translations and big picture thoughts, I really appreciate that. Thanks!!!

@Till are you still there? It would be fun to follow along together so just give a shout if you want us to wait a bit, or if you are already ahead and we should catch up!

Time for Ch 16 - which just peaking ahead a little looks a LOT easier than 15!

Still here, but strapped for time. I’m falling behind in my book clubs. Hopefully, work will lighten up in the coming weeks. Don’t feel the need to wait for me at this moment. I will try and catch up, but I can’t commit to that at the moment.

Good to hear from you! No pressure, stay well irl. We’re slow enough you’ll surely catch up again. We’ll be around when you’re able to come back!

Haha ch 16 was fun and I kept going into ch 17. I love how different every chapter is and I wasn’t expecting this…

Ch 16 impressions

Uh, is that a realistic portrayal of 90s PE in Japan?

What?! I don’t only know thugs :joy:

I love the judo guy’s imagination running wild here

OMG Inoue captures bashful teenager looking at love interest perfectly here

Very creepy :see_no_evil:

mitra’s impressions of the 16th chapter were enough motivation for me to finish it as well haha! I’m yet to read the 17th one though.

Ch 16

Apparently, these are called “bloomers”, and they fell out of fashion in the late 90s.

Found this really interesting piece, although I’m not sure how accurate it is: Bloomers - The Japan Times

and also found this image of how it looks irl - so maybe it is a realistic portrayal after all fsfs (would’ve been such a nightmare for me lol)

Oh that article on the bloomers is fascinating, good find. I’ll ask my friend about it, as maybe she had to wear those 🫨 Thanks so much for posting!

I finally read the 17th chapter and then realised I had only one more chapter left to finish the 2nd volume, so I ended up reading the 18th one as well!! I can’t believe we’re almost done with the second volume :')

Ch 17

This chapter was really dialogue-heavy. For some weird reason, I find even umineko less taxing than reading slam dunk - maybe the short forms and slang words that are making it harder?

The first two pages, where Sakuragi rejects the judo club invitation but still wants Haruko’s pictures are sooo funny.

I’m still not quite over these boys having access to Haruko’s pics though. It makes me feel so queasy. I hope that in the third volume, we get to read more about basketball and how our MC begins to befriend everyone in the club instead.

Ch 18

loll I don’t know the Judo game rules, but Sakuragi always does something hilarious to escape these situations (reference to the headbutt). :joy:

Damnnnn and Sakuragi looked so cool when he finally put down Aota! I loved those few panels - the outfits and the art were soooo amazing! And our boi didn’t give up on basketball after all!

I got stuck halfway reading the post about judo man’s grudge against captain. The grade school grudge was interesting in a way that it still gets to him.

That was great comedy, I liked that best

Yeah I didn’t like how central that was, it was a turn off for me, too. let’s hope it’s not a key feature coming up

I’m back in the game, on 18 which looks easier

ch 18

:joy: his obsession with being Basketball man knows no bounds. I love that scene.

I wonder what Captain’s backstory is. He seems really defensive about having to be strong and grown up

I’m caught up and ready to get back to our normal weekly discussions!

Yayy welcome back! Super excited to resume reading slam dunk again

ch 17 & 18

Yeah same. I think from the 3rd volume we might be seeing more of the game and the training?? :eyes:

Ikrr  I’m very curious about the captain’s backstory as well!

I’ll get up the volume 3 thread today or tomorrow!
