Hello! Wow I’m so happy you chose this as your first book club hehe. I am so excited to have someone else join us alone for the ride! We’re currently reading the third volume, but we’d be super happy to join you for discussions, memes, and everything else!

Edit: Also, feel free to read at your own pace because while @mitrac and I are reading the 3rd vol, I think @TheNerdyNova has already completed the 13th vol? So regardless of your pace, you’ll have good company!

Finally getting around to reading slam dunk! Got the 新装再編版 vol.1 from the library, and will swap it out with each respective volume. I watched the entire anime back in spring and it’s my joint favourite anime of all time (seriously go watch it if you like the manga), so excited to get to the manga finally! The joys of being done with n2 study!

Random thoughts - will update while reading

Summary

エトセトラ扱い was very funny
I’ve always thought having 10 classes in a high school year is crazy… What a different time in Japan it was. My school dropped from 7 to 6 classes a couple years ago (previous school went from 4 to 3 to 2), and that’s the new normal.

Ch.4 - whaaaa… ゴリ’s hair is soo much taller than the anime.. pretty much every other character looks identical (haruko looks a bit different)

100 pages in for now, finished ch.4. That might be it for today. I want to make this my main manga reading at the moment, because it’s as good as I expected. My library has all the volumes of 新装再編版, and if I get to the last few volumes before summer break, I can probably haggle my way into taking lap couple home over the holidays. So aim is to go through it quite quick. A volume a day is probably too much alongside other stuff, given how long these volumes are (first one is 300 pages!), but I want to get through it pretty quick still. It’s pretty fast, given I know the story and am used to how the characters talk from the anime which really does match quite closely so far.

Ooh really!! Shoooot, I’ll have to watch it after I finish the manga. I’ll probably be sad when I finish the manga, so it’ll give me another way to re-experience the story haha

I’m curious to see how you will like the manga when compared with the anime!

This is so fun! I love reading new impressions.

Jealous!

You’re definitely going to pass me and prath so let me know if you run out of threads (or when you’re like a week from the end of the next Tankoubon! ). Actually… it is summer and if you want to get to the last volume for your summer holiday… you’ll be flying through, I’ll try to get out the remaining threads, maybe a few each weekend to stay ahead of you! Will that work?

My entire frame of reference is the anime, so basically opposite I’m coming at it from the other direction, so I’ll probably ramble a lot about the differences between them! (which from what I’ve heard, aren’t that many, other than the anime ending earlier in the story and a bit differently, hence why reading the manga is necessary).

I think the anime is a bit slept on compared to the manga, as in everyone knows the manga is a masterpiece, but the anime isn’t as relatively popular. Still, it’s really really amazing!

I’ll have to see if I can keep up the pace I want, but even if I do, I doubt I’ll get past the current thread in the next 2 weeks so no rush, but thank you! It’ll depend on if I can take like 6 or 7 volumes home over summer (i.e. how much I can bribe my librarian), which if I can, I’ll probably do like a volume a day  and finish the whole thing by like early August.

Yeah, honestly just from your high reccomendation of the anime I’m way more interested in looking into it now!! I didn’t know if it would be a little outdated or not? But now I’ll definitely watch it!

I didn’t know the anime ended before/differently than the manga!
Have you seen the movie? The first slam dunk? It looks goood and I wanna watch it, but I’m waiting until I finish the manga because I think it would spoil the spot I’m at

Not sure where you are in the story, but (spoiler warning for like earlier than vol.21) the anime series ends earlier, right before the start of 全国大会, after a final practice match which I don’t think is covered in the manga. It’s basically a slight alternate ending to provide a good finish despite them not doing the whole 全国 bit

Yeah the movie is pretty good, it’s a very different vibe though (I didn’t like the first half, the second half is very good. Also 桜木’s voice actor is very very different to the anime series… and not as good imo).
The movie does cover/overlap with the ending of the manga plus extra bits, so yeah probably best to watch it after finishing the main story in the manga

More notes

Notes

Ch.5 - I really can’t get over 赤木’s hair. It’s like the one difference between the two forms so far, and it stands out (literally) so much… uuugh I hope it gets shorter soon

Ch.7 - 桜木 writing 厳格 as 元角
And he just delivers a box of bananas to his desk :joy: :joy:
I don’t think a manga has made me laugh out loud like 10 times in 50 pages before, crazy… and I’ve seen it all before…
Also I like how he just breaks the lock like 10 times for no reason

Ch.8 - there’s really a lot of katakana forms of normal kanji words. I think this might have been a bit of a thing in the anime subtitles, but not as much as in the manga. It’s fine now considering they’re all quite common words or I can work them out easily enough if not.

End of Ch.9 - and that’s the equivalent of vol.1 finished! I’ve still got 100 pages left in vol.1 of the 新装再編版, but I’ll leave that for tomorrow. 100 pages a day ish might be my rate for now on, it seems doable and consistent.

Yeah my katakana game was so strong when I was reading the first couple of volumes.

Yayyy let’s go! It’s kind of wild that I’ve forgotten some scenes from the first two volumes (maybe because of the big break), but I’m super excited to read your thoughts and refresh my memory at the same time so I can pick up Volume 5 soon!
