I see, thank you for the explanation. I guess, I got confused by the 刺さる described as “to be pierced”.
So, when I saw that sentence, I thought:
What’s the subject? The arrow.
What’s it doing? The process of being pierced.
That was clearly the wrong train of thought for understanding this sentence 
But in this case, “to pierce” should also be the correct meaning for 刺さる、shouldn’t it?
