[Seeking Volunteers for User Interviews] WaniKani companion iOS app

Hi all!

I’m just starting development on a native iOS companion app. It uses the official WaniKani API with your personal API token stored securely on‑device (Keychain).

I’m excited to make something that fits naturally into your WaniKani routine. Your early feedback will directly shape what ships first. If you have any concerns about privacy, UX, or feature scope, please ask—happy to answer and adjust. Before I dive too deep, I’m trying to understand what’s most important to you for the initial release: Lessons or Reviews. Early feedback will help me focus and ship something useful sooner.

What I would like to hear back from you:

• Are you interested in using the app?

• For the first release, what’s more important to you: Lessons or Reviews? Maybe something else?

• Any must-have details for your preferred flow? (e.g., keyboard behavior, answer feedback, mnemonics visibility)

• Would you be interested in beta testing?

Thanks.

P.S. You can check a draft idea of my quick proof of concept try in attached files.

IMPORTANT: This is only a draft idea, colors, components will be adjusted so please don’t comment on them

Hey, appreciate it!
I’m novice here, a bit struggled with API TOKEN, Could you explain “How it works“, how to import/export from here to your APP,

Tnk you in advance

Hey,
thank you for your interest.

API token is a sort of key that will identify you to WaniKani API, thus application will retrieve your progress on WaniKani.
Attaching example of creating a token.

Should you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

If you search the forums, you should find at least 3 ios apps. My favorite is Kakehashi by the great wizard Portego.

Feel free to make your own, but it will be hard to beat what we have already.

It strange how could I miss it, because I did a search on the forum and found only outdated threads. Thanks, I’ll check out the Kakehashi.

Hi community!

I’m collaborating with my friend (her post is hidden right above) a UI/UX designer to make sure the experience actually fits how people study on mobile (rather than just wrapping the website).

Before we go too far, we’d love to talk to a few people who actively use WaniKani or existing apps. The goal is to better understand your habits, frustrations, and what really matters in your daily workflow.

We’re looking for a few volunteers for short, informal interviews (around 10–15 minutes). Nothing complicated — just a casual conversation about how you use WaniKani, what works well for you, and what doesn’t (Signal, WhatsApp. IG you name it  ).

If you’re interested in helping shape the app (or just want to share your experience), feel free to reply here.

Thanks.

Hey, Thanks for contributing! Sounds awesome. Actually, I didn’t spend much time here, but I have some Testing experience. Should I pay attention at some special things/functions from User perspective?

I would be glad to help you!

Sounds good,

@catwithcookiesandtea Would you like to participate, or know someone who would? Since you’ve used different apps and the WK website, your input would be super helpful for us.
