I nearly skipped WK this morning, but itās a good thing I didnāt, because for some reason, a ton of new lvl59 kanji came up for review today. I guruād no less than three lvl59 kanji, and I also had two Apprentice 3 kanji come up (meaning I need to get them one more time to guru them).
Iām now up to 28/32, and for the first time, theyāre almost all A4s (there are now six A4s and one A3 left).

After the deluge, the drought. Also an unusually slow day for me, though not quite as bad as late last week.

A bunch of different people mentioned how difficult it is taking a break (like OPs 2 week trip to Japan).
So Iām hoping to make it more common knowledge that Wanikani has a Vacation Mode!
If you remember to turn it on in settings before going on your vacation, reviews will not pile up while youāre gone.
How come?
I also took a 3 year break from WaniKani (but remembered to turn on vacation mode beforehand).
I resumed a litle over a month ago and have been chugging along fine, since I didnāt have a mountain of reviews. I take each one as they come, and let the ones Iāve forgotten drop down the SRS. Iāve advanced 4 levels since!
I hope that doesnāt come off as condescending because I think vacation mode is an awesome feature and am genuinely curious what reasons you have for not using it.
When it rains it pours. Three more lvl59 kanji came up this morning, though one was A3 and hence I āonlyā guruād two of them. 30/32, only two kanji left to level up and theyāre all A4 now.

I assumed I would level up this morning, but the Random Number Gods said ānot today!ā. But that just means the odds go up for tomorrow.
It looks like the chance of leveling up this morning was 56.6%, and it will be 65.3% tomorrow.

Well, I did it. I just leveled up for the very last time. It was actually a bit annoying because the last lvl59 kanji came up at the very end of my 100 review session. Itās a lot more convenient when the level up kanji comes up earlier in the session, because then I can stop it early and have time to look through the new lessons, and this happened to line up with the weekly Content Updates so I had 7 extra lessons just from that as well. Oh well, I managed anyway.
I raced through the new lessons without looking in order to get them done in time and will have to cram them later with BishBashOnce (not counted in my study times), but realistically, Iād have to do that anyway, because thereās no way you can actually remember 30 new kanji after seeing them once, even if you do go more slowly and take the time to actually read the mnemonics and so on.
Anyway, hereās my level up graph. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be. Looks like it took me 46 days to level up this time, mainly due to the Japan trip.
Normally, whenever I level up, I do two extra review sessions four and twelve hours later (and sometimes a third the next day) in order to get a head start on the new kanji.
I did the first extra session like usual this morning, but it got off to a slow start, because despite having 39 unguruād kanji, somehow not a single one came up in until Iād reviewed 45 items (out of 492). The odds of that happening are apparently only 2.021%!
(I ended up with a total of six unguruād kanji coming up for review during the session, which is a little above average for the last 55 only, but a little below average for the 100 as a whole.)
Did two extra review sessions today like usual, for a total of 300 reviews. However, with a large number of other items pending review, the new kanji didnāt come up that much, and I only got a relatively small head start on leveling.

One surprise is that it now shows the same level up progress UI for level 60 as every previous level. It has the same progress bar saying āTo level up you need to guru X of Y kanjiā, etc., even though you wonāt actually reach a new level for doing so, it just says āto finish level 60ā instead of āto reach level 61ā or whatever like the previous levels. Iām pretty sure that when I hit level 60 the first time back in December 2020, there was a different UI for level 60, but I guess at some point in the last three years, they changed it.
