[Request] Allow for typing in multiple readings

Hey together :). I just restarted WaniKani after taking a little break. And after setting up all my scripts once again, I noticed that just like the last time I used WK, I am missing a single feature heavily, and that is the option to type in multiple answers when asked for the reading of a Kanji. I don’t care much about multiple meanings, but I do think it is very important to know every reading if a Kanji has several. So basically what I am searching for is a script that:

  • allows for typing in multiple readings
  • marks the answer as correct if none of the readings is wrong and
  • marks the answer as wrong if at least one of the readings is wrong

I got a little experience in programming, but almost zero experience in JS (and userscripts) and thus am not able to write it myself at the current point in time. Since this does not look like it is too hard to do, I hoped for some veteran like @rfindley to be able to answer the question if a script like that is possible. I would even be willing to write the script myself, but what I need to know for that is if the WK API allows for checking the answers’ correctness via userscript. If yes, would it be possible to implement this feature into Double-check?

Thanks in advance,
Eagle

I don’t think it’s unimportant to learn multiple readings, but I think “every” reading would be overdoing it. WaniKani doesn’t even display every reading for many kanji.

生 has 7 different readings - do you really want to have to type all of them each time?

The vocab items are where you get to exercise your knowledge of the different readings, while only the most common one(s) is/are given with the kanji.

P.S. rfindley doesn’t seem to be frequenting the forums recently (bugs have shown up in scripts and there has not been a response in a while from them)

I think there is (or was) a script which allows multiple readings… Have you looked at the list?

Like @Kumirei said, I think someone may have written such a script, though I’ve never seen it.

Starting with Double Check would be probably easiest. In the startup() function, I grab a reference to the built-in answer checker and store it in a variable old_submit_handler. To get it to evaluate the answers in your own way, you will need to call your own answer checker function instead. Then, to preserve the original pass/fail behavior of WK, you could replace the answer with an answer that WK will accept or reject (based on whether your own function decides if it is a pass or fail), and submit that answer to WK.

(And although I do a quick read through the forums every day, @Rowena is right that I haven’t been responding much. I’m swamped with work and doing rennovations on my house, which leaves me with no free time for now. I’m looking forward to things slowing down sometime soon :sweat_smile: ).

Poor @rfindley has been swamped for a year now

Found this with a quick search, but there could be more iterations

@Leebo If the creator of WK says so, then there must be some truth to it ;D. Didn’t know there were that many meanings.

@Rowena I never looked at the vocab that way. I’ll consider this and see if I still want a script like that after a few levels of vocab :).

@rfindley Thanks, that’s very valuable information :). If I do decide to write it, I’ll start with that approach. Also, good luck with your rennovations!

@Kumirei Wow, I’m amazed I missed that, I once looked up almost every userscript there was and didn’t stumble upon it. I will try it out, thanks a lot for looking it up!

Not sure if it’s even on the list, but a search found it 251446983644938240

Yep, pretty much. That’s one negative side of contract work. I had one client for most of my years as a contractor, and the work was very steady. But they had a market slump 3yrs ago. So, I hunted for new (and good) long-term clients. And just when I found a pretty good one, my old client’s market suddenly surged again. So, between the two clients, plus rennovations at home, it has been crazy. I could turn down work, but I don’t know which client is the best long-term prospect, so I’m doing what I can to at least keep the relationship going with both.

(This is also why I would consider giving up contracting for a steady, full-time, remote-only job at a company that values the boundary between work and home life. But that’s relatively hard to find, especially since my work experience is in a narrow field… though the underlying skills would transfer well to almost any programming stack if given a bit of time to transition).

Welp, since I love programming so much, I kind of couldn’t resist writing the script, no matter if I want to use it in the end or not xD.

The code probably isn’t written perfectly, so forgive me for any kind of mistakes, but if anyone is interested, here’s my version of the script:

(Edit: in case anyone ever stumbles upon this thread again, here’s the updated version for the current API)

Since I love the Script Katakana Madness, I made the mod accordingly (although it should work without it just as fine). Basically, it will check all answers (but only for readings, not meanings) separated by a simple dot each. Then it either marks the answer as right or wrong and converts it so you can still see everything you typed in (just formatted a little differently, couldn’t find a workaround for now; when you try something else, WK will either not accept the answer or show only the last reading you typed in instead of all of them).

E.g., for the Kanji 口, you type in “コウ.ク” (Katakana due to On’yomi in my case because I use Katakana Madness). Then it will present your answer (either marked as right or wrong) as “コウ・ク”. Like I said, the dot is a workaround I didn’t find a better option for.

Welcome to the scripting addict club! :slight_smile:

Quick Javascript tip…
You can replace this:

answerText = '';
for(var i = 0; i < (answerArray.length - 1); i++) {
    answerText += answerArray[i];
    answerText += '・';
}
answerText += answerArray[answerArray.length - 1];

with this:

answerText = answerArray.join('・');

Thanks, that’s a neat QOL improvement :D!
