Ahhh I love your snake so far! I’ve never tried crochet so my opinion isn’t worth anything, but it looks like you’re doing a good job so far!! It’s cute hehe
I’m glad baby snake was brave enough to make an appearance :flexed_biceps::face_with_steam_from_nose:

On the last day of January I finished another manga!! ヤンキー君と科学ごはん vol 4

I don’t think it’s my #1 favorite, but I do enjoy this series!! I feel like I would enjoy it more if it was heavier towards the character writing side of things, than the science side. Which, it is a manga about the science of cooking, so I’m not slighting it for that, just my preference I think ;))

As for my month of January, it both went better and worse than I was expecting! (Mostly better)

My January Wrap-Up

Looking at my goals for this year, I:
-Already fully completed one goal (a video game in Japanese)
-Am ahead on my manga goal! (7/52!!!)
-And a little behind on my novel goal

I killed it with the manga in January!! And am hoping I can keep that momentum. I read 3 extra manga more than I needed to! Ah, I’m also keeping up my goal so far to read a Yellow Magazine+ article each week!

But I will admit, I have been struggling with novels  I have not been reading my novel every day. Right now I just reallly want to finish the one I’m reading, and then try to diagnose the problem. I want to be able to read novels more often, but I’m not sure what I’m struggling with!! I wonder if maybe it’s a combo of I’m not currently reading something I enjoy (it’s also digital and I think I prefer physical), and I think I’m enjoying manga more right now. Manga is easier so maybe novels just feel more intimidating or more of a chore?? (Even though I’ve read novels before, and when I sit down to read it’s actually not that hard). I’m not quite sure! But I think I’m going to put a firm goal on February to finish my current novel!! (Which I only have like 50 pages left in anyway )
みんな、2月も互いに頑張りましょうね!:fire:

With only 50 pages left, I’m sure you can do it, but if you’re really not enjoying it,DNF is always an option….congrats on the manga boom!

自動販売機に生まれ変わった 第一巻 - 16 pages (18% → 24%)

Bit of a slow one today, had to prioritise self care as it was a hard day. I’m feeling much more recharged now though, so should be able to focus more tomorrow :blue_heart:

:bookmark: Home post // February 2 :sunrise: :bell:

・ビブリア古書堂の事件手帖 6 || (18 → 21%), 66 / 315 pages

Tiny read.

That is a very good point… I have a hard time DNFing books in English, and even more so in Japanese  haha
But you made me think of a new idea. If I don’t finish it by February (which is more than doable), I will DNF it :head_shaking_vertically:

わかるわかる!Actually, this is me too, but some very respectable (as in they read lots of books) WK members occasionally DNF so I’m beginning to think I should allow myself this option too.

After million years I returned to 香君! I already forgot many names =/ But at least I still remember the overall plot.

I always ask… How do you keep track of the percentage guys?

it’s just on the bottom right in my reader (ttsu) with the character count

yea I’m happy my appetite has increased, I can read for alot longer than before and you too it seems you are reading more too

After trying a manga club (ギャルと恐竜) on here I decided to switch approach and try to read something different. Last year I studied on みんなの日本語初級 I, so today I started the related book to have something familiar to read. It was a great feeling because I realize I can understand even words I either don’t know or remember.

I realize once more I have mixed feelings with Furigana since I lean towards them rather than the kanji itself, but still it would be impossible to read everything without lol

Reading: よつばと!② & しろくまカフェ① :right_arrow: p25/15
Yotsuba 2 is good. It’s a bit hard to understand some of the colloquial teasing-ish kid to kid expressions. But if I “pretend” I can understand, my brain seems to carry on just fine using context. Shirokuma Cafe continues to be ridiculous and hilarious. Totally my style of humour!

  • Another big block of 逆転裁判2 case 2, neeeeearly at court… Spoke to a bunch of witnesses… lots of vocab to ingest.
  • Finished 税金本1, a pretty good read, but tossing up whether to continue it immediately or not… I got a little bored in the middle, but the first chapter and last chapter of the volume were more compelling. Either way, I’m not going to drop it - just a question of priority.
  • Starting メガネ忘れた11, nearly finished with the series. Should be able to knock this out today.

Ah, this is one of my series I’m currently reading!! I like it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: But I can understand getting bored part way through. I like it best when it blends the characters and story with the long explanations about books. I don’t know, sometimes I think it loses that balance a little, especially if you just want to get past the long explanations or side emphasis on the books. (Or maybe if my Japanese was a little better it would be faster to get through those sections)
I also kind of feel that way about another series I’m reading about cooking science. But maybe you didn’t feel exactly the same about 税金本 though haha

Haha, I was going to comment that I was just reading another Yankee Does Unexpected Thing manga!

I think the main reason was there was a bit of a difficult explanation about how to search for readings of rarely-encountered kanji (or an author’s name?) that took a while for me to parse and I was like, uhh, I’m not sure what’s going on here. That followed another (what felt like a) one-shot episode with the kid who had a hoarder family that I found kind of interesting, but was also like, what’s the relation to the main cast? There really wasn’t a ‘hook’ beyond the premise. (For instance, another hobby manga I love, Sweetness and Lightning, pulls all of the threads together in one go because cooking as a group activity relates to all three main cast members on an emotional level; this kinda just felt like it’s only really about Yankee-kun right now). Thankfully the last chapter seems to have swung it around a bit by trying to intro more backstory for him.

Anyway, I’ll definitely be back to it eventually, just not sure if I’ll keep it on my permanent rotation or not - it’s a little difficult for me to read casually, and it’s not quite passing my ‘expend effort’ threshold. Maybe as you say when I get a little more skilled.

I was talking about this on the discord recently, but this is sort of how I approach Kansai-ben (Kansai-accented Japanese)… if I try and work out what people are saying my brain freezes up, but if I can just sound it out in my head magically it becomes understandable dialogue somehow - like the shape of the meaning falls into my head without me having to actually know the precise grammar (or even words sometimes)
