• Started 自称悪役令嬢な婚約者の観察記録。1 | L30 (Fiance Villainess Observation Diary) and hoo boy it’s rough. It’s tough. It’s incredibly text dense. But I can read it… slowly. And there’s loads and loads of words that turn up over and over so if I can get those into the ol’ brainbox I’m riding pretty. Definitely not a one-day series though. But good lord it’s fun. (I still need to check a translation though because I keep missing little things or failing to interpret conjugations properly, sigh)

I’ve gone better this last week. I’ve almost caught up with my manga reading (and have a plan for the rest), and am only falling slightly more behind with the advanced dictionary.

I’ve also started reading 明日の世界で星は煌めく, and managed to read over 2 weeks worth in 3 days, so I feel like I should be able to catch up.

If I make no more progress on my other books this week, I’ll drop a couple that I’ve fallen behind on, hopefully with a plan to read them when I’m not in so many other clubs.

February Summary

Life and stuff

February was definitely a bigger challenge for me personally compared to January. The schoolwork started piling up, which resulted in a couple of evenings where I struggled to keep my eyes on the text and not fall asleep. All in all, I read less than in January, but I still managed to keep the streak, partially thanks to ファミレス行こ releasing a new chapter halfway through the month, which gave me a motivation/energy boost!

Reading

As for the stuff I read: I've read (or attempted to read) some of the worst things I've seen in a while, but I also read my absolute favorite stories out of this whole challenge!

1. The Best Overall: サラバ、愛しき悲しみたちよ → the set up, the writing style, the atmosphere, almost everything here was on point. It also suits the winter reading theme, as one of the scenes takes place in a snowy, winter scenery - and it was a scene that made me hold my breath! Overall a wonderful story, so happy I found it.

2. The Second Best: 星を掴む → the set up, although a bit out there, was very fun to read, and the characters were written very well. Generally such an enjoyable read that it could take #1 if not for the fact, that it ends really abruptly. Like c’mon, I need an epilogue of some sort!

3. The Nope One: 鶴は今日も夜に歌う → this is the ONLY fanfic on the list (for both months) that I just couldn’t stand. What even is this set up? Why are my beloved characters suddenly annoying? The writing style was, hm, okay I guess, but overall, it was a nope from me.

Going forward

Will I continue in March? Probably not (sigh). Just like I predicted I got far too busy to stick with this challenge. I will still read here and there, but I need a free pass to just crash out at the end of a busy day without the creeping guilt xD I also started playing Love and Deepspace in Japanese (anyone??) so that's a more chill way for me to read/listen, especially during my commute. Anyhow, by the end of May I should be done with most of my exams, so if there is a similar challenge for late spring/summer, I will definitely join! Thank you everyone~

Another chapter done of 一瞬を生きる君を. This one felt easier than the one before it in terms of language. Flowed nicely. Had to work today so not as much time to read, and again got distracted watching Slam Dunk.
Tomorrow is my only actual day off this week but I’ll be out and busy for most of it so might only get a bit done in the evening.

I might make a roundup post for the challenge so far tomorrow if I get time, but I’m waiting to see if someone else makes a nicely formatted and easily stealable one first

Thoughts:

I was thinking to myself that this reading challenge wasn’t anything special in terms of progress, but looking back on this one compared to previous challenges, my reading speed has gone up a lot! I would say that this challenge, I felt able to comfortably read from children’s novels to the extent that the pacing of the book actually feels appropriate, and have made a lot of progress reading more difficult novels. I can also explore new manga easily without worrying about whether or not the level is too difficult, and I discovered 絶叫学級 which was an unexpected gem.

In total, I read:

340 pages from children’s novels (L20-24)
and 239 pages from novels/light novels (L27-30)

Compared to the last challenge (Fall 2024), which was:

168 pages from children’s novels (L20-24)
and 55 pages from japanese HP (L31)

I doubled my children’s novel pages and read almost 4x as much from higher level books! We’ll call that a success, see you all next time!

Finished! The story is so cute, I think this might be my favorite volume so far.

For some reason I woke up super early this morning, so I got up early too. I set some goals for today (I don’t usually do that). One of them was to finish this book. Then I calculated how long that was going to take and my calculator told me 6 hours. And I was like, “oh gosh that’s a long time but also reachable, let’s get it ”. I probably spent closer to 7-8 hours. Dozed off once around lunch time. Felt my focus dwindling around dinner time Had some food and kept reading. And finally, here we are. Well done, me

A nice strong start to the year, with 9 volumes of manga read so far!
I’m pretty happy with myself for staying consistent, because I decided to start doing a degree in English Language and Literature at the start of this year, so I’ve been busy getting started with that too!

I was planning to include a progress picture of my crochet snake with this post too, but I’m travelling for this weekend so I’m not able to take one - so I’ll post that in a few days!

Thanks as always to all of you for the ongoing motivation. This thread is my favourite corner of the internet.

QUICK SUMMARY
February has been awesome, I have genuinely and wholeheartedly started reading in Japanese and to that extent I noticed how my reading comprehension significantly went up, of course in due time I’ll have to go through tougher materials but thus far, I’m content with my progress and results. I initially didn’t think I’d have it in me to stay consistent with reading, but here I am 20 days later and I’m reading everyday.

As far as “stats”

• Break day from 逆転 to do the week’s ボッチ. We’re nearly at the end of the animated part, so will be interesting to see if my understanding craters. Interestingly enough, coming at it after 悪役令嬢な婚約者 has made it seem way more comprehensible… though my reading pace feels as slow as ever.
• Continuing 悪役令嬢な婚約者 which is still extremely difficult, but I’m having fun.

I’ve noticed for manga ‘above my level’ I tend to adopt a process of speed reading ahead to get a vague outline of the story without lookups, then coming back around and following through more intensely afterwards (my ‘real’ progress meter, as noted above).

I think this is a good way of progressing, but it does make it clear this manga is probably too difficult for me to attempt as a ‘casual read’ - after clearing a bunch of manga away in a day or two, this difficulty is confronting. But at the same time I feel like I’m grappling with it well enough and it’s mostly just unfamiliar vocab, so… idk.

It is very dark! But it makes a really good first manga as it’s an easy read and quite compulsive. Art is great too, though slightly disturbing in places.

It was the first manga I read, as up till that point I thought I wasn’t interested in manga!
