12 more pages of ふらいんぐうぃっち 2 today. I keep coming across sentences where I can recognise most words but struggle to piece together the meaning and it gets a bit frustrating, even though I know it’ll come together eventually when I learn more of the grammar words that are holding things together. Still, it’s important to acknowledge these frustrations and remember that learning a new language is tough
Whew, long day. Did a lot of chores, dog entertaining, and Japanese studying today. Also braised/roasted duck for the first time and it came out wonderful.
Two more chapters of 愛でたいセンセイ, putting me pretty close to the end of the second book. I found out today that the series won’t continue past the second book, which is a shame. The author did say they have a new serialization coming out in August, though, so hopefully that’ll be good also!
For some variety, I started reading a serialized series called 月はタピオカみたいに, which is an isekai where an… influencer for a boba shop gets hit by a truck and is reborn in the body of girl in Taiwan… who runs a restaurant? Also the little teaser at the beginning says this story is about a bunny girl and kitsune, which… I don’t know how that factors in. MMORPG? Yeah I have no idea what’s going on but it’s honesly pretty good so far!!!
Wanted to read more but I’m falling asleep. Until tomorrow!
Even if it turns out to be too challenging for now, you can always read it later. Looks good though. I’d like to get into reading some CLAMP eventually…
I asked them that and they told me it wasn’t possible.
@Steven2673626 If you look into it maybe also getting inspiration from the html/css results of https://reader.ttsu.app when you display in vertical mode could help. Pretty sure a LLM could vibe prototype a poor’s man vertical mode…
So I’m incredibly late starting the challenge. I have been reading, but July was very inconsistent, mostly due to travelling in Japan. I was doing a lot of driving around, plus hadn’t planned a lot of the trip, so instead of reading in the evenings I was trying to figure out what I was doing the next day! I did do quite a lot of reading in Japanese, in that I was trying to decipher menus and hotel websites etc.
OK formatting clearly didn’t work - will fix now, or later if I can’t figure it out. Fixed I think?
10 pages of ふらいんぐうぃっち 2 this afternoon to finish up another chapter and I played some Animal Crossing as well today. I really didn’t realise how much the characters all talk until I tried to understand them in a language I barely understand haha!
虚構推理短編集 岩永琴子の出現 | L37 reading while listening to audiobook (or if I’m being honest - looking at words while the audiobook reads it to me, level 37 is not where my reading is at).
I’m deeply amazed by how little of the title I can actually read. I can guess it from the context. I can remember it from Audible’s first minute. Actually really read it with my eyes? Nope
ボクラノキセキ 1 | L26 - this series looks just as interesting as it was to me 10 years ago. I’m so excited to be reading it in Japanese~
Aug 2nd:
More of 虚構推理短編集 岩永琴子の出現 | L37 - I’m at 79% now. I did 8 lookups in today’s chapter (1 hour 43 minutes) which is a lot considering I have an audiobook.
Today’s highlight is ぶまな先輩 - Google overview tried to convince me it’s not a real word; the character this was told to was also pretty surprised by the word choice so… I’ll go ahead and assume it’s coming from 不間 (blunder, clumsiness) turned into an adjective.
With this one you can see the different style of linework that he started to develop during the 50s - bolder more simple lines, with fewer colours used overall.
I finished my first Japanese novel and have thus reached another milestone in my Japanese learning process.
Please don’t mind コンビニ人間, the novel that i dropped, glaring at me from far away.
What is more, I started reading my next novel, the only other novel I own by the same author.
Vague thoughts on 木曜日にはココアを
This novel wasn’t my cup of tea…or do I say cup of cocoa? *ba-dum-tss*
The reason why I read much more of it in the last couple of days wasn’t because it was gripping to the point where I couldn’t put it down but because I wanted to be done with it as soon as possible, so I could move on to something that is hopefully more interesting.
The writing style seems pleasant as the descriptions manage to evoke atmosphere and some imagery, though I can’t comment too much on it as I haven’t been exposed to many writing styles yet.
As for the story, I didn’t hate it but I didn’t like it either; there were plenty of “I see what you did there”-moments with all the set ups and connections throughout the short stories but at the same time there were too many moments that just made my eyes roll. Overall, I was more pleased about being able to understand most of what I was reading than being entertained by the story itself.
As I’m now “officially” 10% used to the author’s writing style, I simply thought of jumping right into 赤と青とエスキース. I know that at least one fellow WK community member quite likes this one, but I don’t have any expectations for it myself with the exception that I hope that it will at least end up liking it 5% more than 木曜日にはココアを. I’m not holding my breath but I will gladly eat those words if the book ends up surprising me and winning me over.
I’d like to focus more on reading novels and/or light novels during August in order to get a bit more familiar with reading plenty of (unvoiced) text – they’re still a different beast compared to visual novels which I’m more used to by now.
Woah, congratulations! It’s a biggie! I feel pretty much like you do about this book. I thought it started well, but as it progressed, I got less and less interested in the characters. Also, as an Australian reader, I had some beef with the author’s claim that the Jacaranda (a flowering tree from South America) was our national flower emblem on par with cherry blossoms for Japan.
Been really busy the last couple of days, so not much time for additional reading.
Taking it quite slow with 薬屋2 but going from 1% → 2% a day is alright. A lot of vocab and so on to get to grips with but I’m still enjoying myself, so will just treat it as a long-haul project.
Finally got around to finishing Gal x Gal Yuri, which wasn’t particularly difficult but just kind of taking some time for whatever reason.
