  • みぞれ = a mix of rain and snow; sleet. Somewhat 氷雨(ひさめ), but not yet 霰(あられ) or 雹(ひょう)
  • 勧(すす)める = to offer (e.g. a drink, a seat). Well, to recommend, too.
  • そばだてる = to strain (one’s ears, one’s eyes) = 欹(そばだ)てる. Different from そばだつ (though potential form).
  • 生薬(しょうやく) = natural drugs, e.g. plant or animal products in Chinese medicine
  • 闘争心(とうそうしん) = fighting spirit. Like 闘志(とうし) or 闘魂(とうこん)
  • 菌類(きんるい) = fungi. Doesn’t include 細菌類(さいきんるい), where 黴菌(ばいきん) cause diseases.
  • 総(そう)じて = in general
  • ～を境(さかい)に = as a great turning point
  • 平謝(ひらあやま)り = earnest apology

  • 不穏分子(ふおんぶんし) = disturbing elements; troublemakers. 分子(ぶんし) means a little fraction (other than molecules).
