Since I’ve just passed 150 days of reading, I thought I’d compile my stats for the year thus far as well:

That’s nearly a full week of this year spent reading and an average of 23 pages a day!

First post reading challenge day (in Australia!) It’s awesome to see everyone’s stats and progress… I can’t believe how much y’all can read. Collectively we could read all of Japan cover to cover haha. I feel like I’m getting steady progress with 壁の穴. A chapter doesn’t take me so long anymore… which is fun because the story comes at me faster, the more I read. I’m excited to keep reading!

Going into this mini readathon, I knew I wanted to continue reading Nausicaä but I did not initially plan on finishing the second book (I had been at page 37/136 before yesterday). But oh boy, how can I even articulate my thoughts here, this is a manga unlike any other I have read. It feels cinematic somehow? But maybe this word just comes to my mind since we all know Hayao Miyazaki as a movie director

The storytelling and atmosphere just feels so dense at times and it’s really captivating. There’s not any tangents and every scene feels like it is important to the overall plot in some way. It’s been many years since I’ve watched the Nausicaä movie so I can’t recall many details but by the middle of this second book, we already get to the final scene of the movie and it feels like this is all just the introduction to the story! I definitely want to watch the movie soon to see where they diverged from the manga

I really want to continue reading Nausicaä! There’s still quite a bit to go as there are 7 books in total, but I can already tell what an extraordinary piece of art this is

I’ve now dealt with (removed from my “to re/read” pile in some way or other) one more book than I’ve bought this quarter. Now I just need to refrain from buying any books in June, and I can make a dent in my (now) 21-book surplus from last quarter, and then from there, actually reduce my “to re/read” from when I started this. It should go quicker once I’ve finished with the 4koma. I don’t know why those take so long to read. You wouldn’t think they would. Or at least, I wouldn’t.

Terry misses his sister a lot, so his ewwnicorn asks if he has a strong family resemblance to her and suggests he try crossdressing, so when he looks at himself, it might feel kind of like he’s seeing her again. He ends up just admiring himself in the mirror because he’s even prettier than Milly lmao. Well, he’s still cheered up, so… plan failed successfully?

The king slime isn’t slime x4 in this game. :​( I caught and raised those four slimes for nothing :​( Unless I need 8… It’s 8 that amalgamate into a king slime, after all, and the family tree does record back to the grandparents… Aughhh, いやだぁ……

Decided to try scouting a metal slime that I found while trying to get a male bakudan baby (I scouted 3 females and was starting to think it was a female-only species, when finally) since it’s only got 2 HP—the ones on the snowy mountain have 4. “This monster is special and so cannot be scouted.” Whyyyy

Anyway, I needed a male bakudan baby to breed with my female bakudan baby which is my only monster already at lv 20—for ScoutQ question 6, you need to bring Dorothy a monster with 強 in front of its species name, attainable by breeding a lv 20+ monster with another of the same species (lv 10+). It turns out that this is the evolution breeding! She jumped from Rank F to Rank C and acquired すばやさアップ２ despite neither of them maxing out (or even investing any skill points at all in) すばやさアップ! So that’s pretty cool. I was expecting to have to increase by a single rank at a time lol. So now I’ll need to try and get another male to see if you can evolve the same monster twice. The story can totally wait, right? lol (Although Rank C-A monsters need to be lv 50+ to become 最強, so that’s. Eegh.)

Though, since that’s how 進化配合 works, the king slime formula might be something else entirely. Wellp, guess I’ll find out.

I ended up naming my muddy hand Mortamor because one has served as his hand twice so far (or thrice, technically) in the DQMTW manga. The first time, Terry’s sad that there’s no really strong monsters around to fight, so his monsters decide to try and cheer him up by having a few pretend to be Mortamor’s final form: two muddy hands, of course, to be his left and right hands, and a teaky mask (or related) to serve as his head. The second time, Terry has Mortamor in his party, and they’re going through a dungeon when Mortamor realises he’s accidentally left his left hand behind on the previous floor. Terry’s like, “Don’t worry, I’ve got a spare.” -pulls a muddy hand out of his satchel- Also, I just think it’s funny for one of the weakest monsters to be named after one of the strongest.

Despite the QoL changes between 1 and 2, there are some things that were better in 1. The library (bestiary and acquired skill list, plus acquired trait list in 2) used to be in the main menu; now you’ve gotta go to the 預かり所. They got rid of the いろいろ使う tactic; Pro added a “focus on buffs” and a “focus on debuffs,” which is cool I guess (read: I doubt I’ll ever use them), but I hope they didn’t get rid of the varied/balanced for those. Guess I’ll have to check my regular copy at some point. And the battle AI is definitely worse. The party will try to use skills/spells when they don’t have the MP, and I don’t remember that happening in 1 (though ofc enemy monsters will sometimes), and they’ll cast healing spells even when the target is down only 1 HP (out of like 40+, so it’s not like 1-6 is even that large a percentage). I liked leaving my healer to react to the tide of battle, but I think I’m gonna have to give them すばやさアップ so they’re more likely to go first and direct them.

Read this last year in English and I agree. It’s the closest a comic has come to feeling like an epic SF/F novel to me — just FULL of stuff and ideas, so much going on at once. And yeah the movie covers like an eighth or less of the comic it felt like

The flying monsters that will swoop down at you have not gotten any better at aiming. Even if you’re standing perfectly still, they will miss you. Repeatedly. It’s honestly kind of pitiful.

Turns out if you wanna scout a metal slime, it’s gotta be one of the 4-HP ones from the third area onwards. The highest scout chance I’ve managed was only 3.2% (failed, ofc). But it turns out that monsters with multi-attack are perfect to learn metal slash! They keep their normal attack # and get metal slash applied to each. That’s not true in all games, so I wasn’t sure if it would be here.

In any case, I evolved my swingin’ hipster today, and due to the SP I sank into Bounty Hunter, he gained a new trait: Metal Killer. It apparently means he’ll deal more damage to metal-bodied monsters, though as I did this right before saving and quitting, I didn’t get to test whether it grants him extra scout chance too or not.

I just can’t stop reading this series, hah. Sat down and read 3 chapters today of what would be the third book, if it were released. Chapter 18 just came out last month, but I’m gonna go ahead and treat chapters 13-18 as the third volume and assume it will follow the same cadence.

In any case, this story has gotten much better as its gone on. In essence, it’s a very simple yuri about high school love, lack of understanding of love, and miscommunication. There’s not a lot of circumstances that make it particularly unique, which coincidentally is probably why it feels so easy to read. It uses a lot of common vocab, and I’m just soaring through the pages at a rate that feels magical! All that said, I’m truly enjoying the story and all the feels involved. Too bad I’ll be caught up soon.

And then I can go back to 大正忌憚魔女 after this and get absolutely wrecked by vocab and slang, lol
