Just some random thoughts about reading every day.

I’ve tried to form a habit reading every day but so far this year, I haven’t been able to stick with it. I think one of my problems is that I don’t set goals for myself. What I do is basically, “Oh! I wonder what I’m going to read today? Hmm…I’m not sure…” and then, “Oh, no! It’s late and I’m tired! Aww…” Something like that. Hard to for a habit when you don’t have a particular destination in mind and a mentality (lack of self-discipline) like that.

For the summer, I’m going pick out a variety of sources to read, instead of saying something vague like “the manga I brought home from Japan last year” or “maybe some NHK Easy articles.”

It sounds like you’re already reaching this on your own, but maybe having the term for it might help? This challenge is pretty much about making SMART goals

Here’s a 13 page explanation and how to^
But the point is that you have a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely goal. The reading challenge takes care of the timely aspect and if you are on WK’s forums, it’s probably relevant as well. From there it’s just a matter of making your goal achievable, measurable, and specific. If you set your goal to a page a day of a book, you’ve got achievable and measurable. Now, as you’ve found, you personally need to chose the specific reading material to make it more specific.

I use SMART goals for anything major I want to get done or longterm goals and I’ve found it helps a lot.

・ 薬屋のひとりごと 14 (44% → 100%) // Time: 4h 58m. Total: 9h 50m.

Finished this book during the readathon. First time I’ve finished a Kusuriya book in less than 24h. 408 pages. This volume was very good. I’m glad I chose it for the readathon. I did lookups on jisho: 81. There were some Chinese words or madeup words as well it with no result. For example Chinese plants or herbs.

・ 薬屋のひとりごと 15 (0% → 13%) // Time: 35m. Total: 35m.

I had the momentum to keep reading, so I started Kusuriya 15. My brain is fried now tho. Sleep is going to be so delicious

Well, the first couple of days after I arrived in the UK were ok for reading. Once I arrived in Albania and started my road trip, my reading has predictably suffered. Oh well. I can catch back up after.

Thanks to the readathon I finished volume 1 of 映像研には手を出すな! It was actually much more challenging than I was expecting! But I think it was a good challenge for me. I watched the anime when it came out, which prompted me to buy the manga… but that was like 4 years ago or something, that’s crazy! There’s nooo way I would have been able to understand this back then, so it makes me happy to think about how much I did understand! The story is kind of.. not simple, but relaxed at times? But I think it’s kind of a unique manga/anime in its story and the way it presents ideas. I love it!! I do have the second volume physically which I’m hoping to read soon, we’ll see!!

The upcoming week will also be busy enough, especially in the weekend. I really hope to have time for the Silent Witch though, I’m starting missing it.

香君 1: 30.05% → 48.20%, 2h28m

Finished last week and started a bit of the current week.

よつばと!16: 0/8 → 2/8, 29m

I had this volume lying around for a while now (alongside with the last volume of Frieren), so I decided to get to it when I had little time window. It is so nice to read something so relaxing… But it makes me sad that I’m not in Japan.

Malinkal - Home post

Double post, too busy doing readathon to post here yesterday.

Temporary absurd bulge in reading pile due to readathon and all 9 hours of reading split across a lot of different stuff. Today was recovery mode, so I went book shopping, started some new stuff, didn’t read a huge amount but just 好きにした. Bought some non-fiction books as well as new novels. Pile never gets smaller, does it…

One thing that really helped me is to have goal tiers.

I usually have one long-form read - a ‘project’ read. This is usually several difficulty levels above my current comfortable level and is a strong challenge.

Then I have medium-term goals - usually book clubs and the like. These are usually easier stuff with more scaffolding around it like a community I’m reading with or with vocab sheets etc.

Then there’s short term goals, stuff I can just bang out - NHK easy articles or manga I’m into etc.

I will tend to target something achievable to do in a day - and then anything after that is ‘extra time’. Usually it’s from the longer-term projects, but it can also be from the shorter term ones if I feel like it. It’s all progress.

I also tend to read first thing in the morning after my daily anki, or as close to it as I can, since I find my motivation spikes in the morning and drains over the day. But I’m an early riser.
