This year’s goal is to read every single day. Or rather, to get to the point where I’m reading every single day. In the winter 2024 challenge, I read 23/91 days, or ~25% (although there’s still 1 day left so maybe it’ll be 24/91). Can I up my reading time to read 50% of the days this spring? Can I possibly read every day? We’ll see!

Here we go again! Always excited to start another one of these. The Winter one this year didn’t go very well due to travel and work commitments but I’m hoping I can keep up with this one.

Finish 汐音’s route in バリアブルバリケード VN

My goal is to read 10 manga a month (and hopefully to keep up with all my book clubs).
I’ll be foregoing the calendar and will be posting my progress maybe weekly (or when I really want to share something).

I joined this challenge for the first time in Winter 2024 and really enjoyed it! It pushed me to read every day, even if some days I only read a single page. This time, I will attempt 2 goals:

Finish アオハライド (10 volumes left)
Finish N4単語 (as an Anki deck, but since it is an actual book I’m also tracking it in Natively)

Plus an extra goal which I aim to complete by the end of June:
Finish The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar (plus the Anki deck)

I left wanikani a while a go but now I’m back and ready to try again. I already passed N2 though so Its going to be a good review until I can get up to the upper levels…which I expect to take a long while…but hey its about the journey not the destination!

I plan to read for at least 30 mins a day. I am reading Apothecary Diaries now .

Update. I have actually been reading Mashle. Apothecary diaries had to much Kanji and not enough furigana. I am really enjoying Mashle so far. I am almost done with book 1.

1st april

day one! it’s a bank holiday and there’s family to entertain so today was a ‘squeeze in what i can’ kind of day. read chap 1 (47 pages ish) of no. 6 vol 3 and it’s still kinda tricky but manageable. continue to be baffled at that one MAL review where the person was like ‘this isn’t a dystopia it’s just a slightly futuristic city with a slum problem’ like are we reading the same thing??? also read some stuff on pixiv

today’s nhk article was this one (very short), and read the entries on それは and それぞれ in aDoIJG

what i read over the break (i finished ouran!)

no.6 vol 2 - nothing much to say there tbh. parts of it are a bit tricky to follow.

roughly 4 volumes of ouran and it’s done!!! :tada:

apparently started reading volume 1 all the way back in july of last year, and really committed to it in december, definitely the longest its taken me to read anything but worth it imo. after like ten years i finally found out what happens! i do have my issues with the ending, mainly that literally everyone gets married/paired off with each other which is kind of boring to me (especially when some of these characters showed no interest in romance as a concept or each other) but! tamaki and haruhi are v. v. cute so they get a pass.

the first volumes were a steep learning curve, ngl, but the middle ten volume chunk of roughly vol 6 to 16 was really enjoyable and much easier. the art was better and easier to follow, there were more story arcs as opposed to the ‘new chapter new thing’ format of the earlier volumes which introduced a lot of new (usually obscure) words every chapter. that still made a comeback every now and then, but with breaks of #Teen Drama in between it was easier to handle.

having said that, the first half of vol 17 was a massive difficulty spike and the egoistic club cluv at the end was maybe the worst thing i’ve ever seen but i got through it :joy:

so yeah! if you can overlook some stuff which is a product of it being written in the mid-late 2000s, and ofc get over the difficulty curve/occasionally ropey art, and you like comedies and romances with strong character and relationship development, i’d recommend it! some of the jokes in the second half especially made me laugh out loud

I started Intermediate on Du Chinese. If it’s reading alongside listening, Kanji knowledge can help. Of course I have to catch up with grammar. It’s gonna be troublesome now. (Maybe Pinyin doesn’t need to be exact now, but either listen or read with Pinyin.)

Starts with 曹操.

  • 紡ぐ乙女と大正の月 Vol.4 (42-58%)

  • DIJG : 途端(に)

  • STEINS;GATE 比翼恋理のだーりん

end Ch.1. Practically prologue.

Words of the day
  • 応酬(おうしゅう) = replying back and forth
  • 杓子定規(しゃくしじょうぎ) = strict; inflexible. Measure everything with a ladle :spoon: (杓子(しゃくし)) and a ruler :straight_ruler: (定規(じょうぎ)).
  • 恥(はじ)も外聞(がいぶん)もない = shameless, not worrying about external appearance
  • たらればの話(はなし) = “what if” stories
  • とてもじゃないが(.)… ない = not by any means. とても emphasized by じゃない + が.
  • 付(つ)かず離(はな)れず = not attached, nor separate; maintaining a reasonable distance
  • 低周波(ていしゅうは) = low frequency wave. Has low cycles. Opposite is 高周波(こうしゅうは).
  • 引(ひ)っこ抜(ぬ)く = 引(ひ)き抜(ぬ)く
  • 背(せ)に腹(はら)は代(か)えられない = cannot save oneself without making a sacrifice. Protecting one’s innards with back.

This book is kind of a mystery in how its plot is kind of in the romance genre, but at the same time not? I smell plot twist. If not, I’m gonna be disappointed.

April 1st!
Spring challenge time!
2 chapters of からかい上手の高木さん, and 12 pages of 気になってる人が男じゃなかった today.
I’m gradually catching up with all of my bookclubs - I’m caught up with the Takagi club now, but still behind in all of the others. I’m hoping to be back on track with all of them by some time next week. :crossed_fingers:
