2000 characters from Island :desert_island: today. Slowly slowly discovering more of the Island, and slowly slowly getting better at reading. I keep seeing kanji and vocab from the next few levels, and that makes me happy! Every kanji I learn, every level I climb, more and more, reading gets easier. Slowly, slowly, but surely!

Not too much to report today. Yesterday I read this week’s IMC chapter of とんがり帽子のアトリエ, and today got kind of late so I didn’t get to read セーラー服と機関銃 as planned (thanks Windows…). I’ll take something to bed to read. セーラー服 is not “reading in bed” level for me, but I might try the 本好きの下剋上２novel and failing that, start another volume of 放浪息子, so update on how that goes tomorrow :slight_smile:

Had a lightning strike about how to fulfill the “nonfiction” category of bingo - I’d been groaning over whether to read a history book or a current events book or a biography when I suddenly remembered that recipe books technically count as nonfiction, too :angel:

I found the 超回復めし cookbook thinking it’d be geared toward folks tired from work wanting to make something simple, but it turned out to be more aimed toward people wanting to reach ultimate bodily health :sweat_smile: Quite a few of the recipes are like “sear some chicken breast and eat it with a slice of tomato” which is nice but insubstantial imo haha

some of it looks sooo tasty though

I forgot to update this thread for a while, so it ended up becoming quite a long list. But still reading everyday!

I also read some sample pages of Kiki’s Delivery Service and of Butter (Asako Yuzuki). I’m thinking of joining the bookclub for Kiki which will start on Natively soon. Regarding Butter, it’s been in my mind lately as a book I’d like to read, and I can’t help but feel a strong desire to read it in Japanese. It’s quite hard though… I’ve been considering nominating it to the Advanced Book Club, but I fear my level isn’t that high yet to be able to keep with the pace.

I haven’t been very consistent in my reading in April, so I’m trying to resume my reading each day good habit and it’s been well so far.

Today, I’ve finished ホリミヤ volume 1 and I’m so proud of me !!! :tada: It’s really a manga that shows how much I’ve progressed because it was too difficult for me when I began in december, but now, it’s totally ok with my actual level ^^

  • 古文書(こもんじょ) = historical documents. Monolinguals and IME say the alternate reading is wrong.
  • 劫火(ごうか) = the cosmos-destroying conflagration at the close of a kalpa. Similar sounding to 業火(ごうか) (flame of karma). Another reading is こうか, but IME doesn’t give.
  • 素寒貧(すかんぴん) = penniless; destitute
  • 得意満面(とくいまんめん) = triumphant air; smug

Week 5 update :green_apple:
Didn’t read that much, but I still managed to finish 壁の穴 on Satori. I’ve also read the final episode of the Spring short stories and started コナの大冒険. Also got my level 16 ; I need to slow down because these fast level-up will come back to me in the future, I need to manage the amount of reviews in the long term. BUT I have quite a lot of burned items now, and that feels great (and reassuring).

I didn’t expect 壁の穴 to end so early, it made me more sad that I expected. I guess it’s an universal feeling, that bittersweet emotion when you finish a story, a game, a movie, and that you have to say goodbye (except if you read it again of course, which I will do to study some vocab and grammar notes). The story end well, but I guess it makes me sad to think about the inevitable separation that will come one day or another. Mouses have short lives, Chuuya will die quite soon, Kumiko will grow up and perhaps leave the house behind one day. But I guess she will never forget her little animal friend and the help he gave to her. So in a certain way, Chuuya will still be living, in her heart and memory.
