:books::books: Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Day” Challenge, Spring 2024 Edition! :cherry_blossom: :dango: :seedling: It’s a time of beginnings and flower blossoms in much of the world! For those of us with hay fever, it’s the perfect time to curl up with a book indoors. Or for the lucky, you can relax at a park and read in the sunlight. This Season's Emoji Explanation In Japan, cherry blossoms are seen as the ultimate spring symbol. They bloom like clockwork all over the country and their blooms also coincide with graduation for students. This season’s second emoji :dango: is the spring dango, a type of skewered mochi. The pink represents the cherry blossoms, the white represents the winter that has passed, and the green represents the grasses of summer to come. Lastly, the sprout is to match with all the new plants that can start growing now that the winter has passed. Where does this challenge come from? Back in the summer of 2021, @Redglare had the great idea of a “Read Every Day” challenge, in which participants challenged themselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months. Since then and until now, @Redglare and @windupbird have hosted this challenge every season. Thanks to them, many of us have improved our Japanese and lifestyles! You might notice that I am neither a bird nor glare. I offered to take over the challenge since they’re quite busy (お疲れ様！), but of course they’re welcome to take it back at any time if they want to. I’ll do my best to keep up the encouragement! Please help us keep this a positive, encouraging, and fun space! Please feel free to bribe encourage fellow participants with cute pet and animal photos or recipes even. That’s because each challenge only lasts 2 months. Forever would be a long commitment. By having clear start and end dates, it becomes a much more manageable goal. At the end of the challenge, please consider what worked or didn’t work for you. Did you have fun? Then you can take a break or decide to keep going. Also, please don’t worry about starting late or not completing the challenge! Life happens. This is an open opportunity for everyone who wants to set some reading goals. Everyone is welcome. Some participants have even started tracking their reading in other languages. As @Redglare has said: This is a thread for people who: :bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this spring :bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension :bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress :bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books: To add onto that, this is also a thread for people who want to track or talk about their reading too. If you’d like a computer to do most of your tracking, please check out Natively. Time frame: April 1 - May 31 Again, late starts are totally welcome! Usually people will continue posting through June and some may give some updates even later. It’s all good! You can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you. Personally, I usually extend my reading into the 3rd month since I find these challenges have been great at helping me reach my annual reading goals. As @windupbird has said Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, Japanese webpages/blogs, or Japanese games - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer: “Reading” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated - for example, some people have counted reading Japanese subtitles as reading some days. In general, we are a pretty flexible and forgiving bunch  Need help finding something to read? Check these threads out! @DIO-Berry Does the title need to say “Japanese”? Like Japanese-only Challenge, no multilingual? Also the time frame probably should end at May 31, rather than 30.

Thank you! And good to know about the @

[image] polv: Also the time frame probably should end at May 31, rather than 30. Fixed! Thanks [image] polv: @DIO-Berry Does the title need to say “Japanese”? Like Japanese-only Challenge, no multilingual? While people can track whatever reading they’d like, I think it’s good to keep Japanese in to distinguish it from other challenges. Like my elementary school also had a read everyday of summer challenge. Since the category is reading and not community, this thread gets indexed by Google. Other people may search for Japanese reading challenges, so this’ll make it easier to find.

Good point about the google index. I was thinking the title looks better without the word “Japanese”. For me it’s clear that this thread is about reading in Japanese because it’s in the #japanese-language category and because, in the original post, I had this at the very beginning of the post: [image]booksbooks Read every day challenge - Summer 2021 beach_umbrellabeach_umbrella Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Single Day For A Whole Summer” Challenge! With that line, the intention of the thread is very clear. That’s obviously a mouthful of a title, so I shortened it to “Read Every Day Challenge”. If people in this challenge want to track other languages as well on top of their JP, that’s totally ok. I’ve yet to see anyone join without tracking JP at all. I’d be confused if that happened tbh. Those cases would fit more in #campfire imo. I’m not saying we should do anything about the title, it’s fine either way, I just wanted to express my thoughts on it

Except it’s still the same season for me. It’s the dry season right now Anyway, with the last challenge I’ve completed a 7-month streak. I hope to continue with the streak for this challenge as well. This year, I picked dialogue-heavy books to read and I don’t see that changing any time soon. I just have to hope that there wouldn’t be too much handwriting in it as well. I gave up a couple series this year already because of that. I’d say, worth it

I am not formally signing up for this challenge or participating officially, but I thought since I just committed to a crazy ambitious reading project, I might as well post about it in here for some extra accountability! So, Hyper Misao, a Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling wrestler, is really into tanka poems, and I bought a book called 推し短歌入門 (which is an introduction to tanka through composing poems about your favorite characters) sort of with her in mind, because she’s one of my favorite wrestlers, so the concepts of “推し” and “短歌” are already kind of linked in my brain. (For a bit about Misao’s history with tanka, see here). Misao had her first produce show on May 25, 2023, and it was wildly ambitious and really stretched the bounds of what pro wrestling can be (here’s a description of the show. It involved dimension hopping/time travel and all sorts of nonsense). She has another produce show scheduled for April 19, 2024, which will likely be similarly genre-defying, though we have no hints toward what this year’s show will involve, at least not at this point. Last year, Misao’s show was extremely well-received and many people (including me) shared their thoughts on twitter, and she went through the tag and liked pretty much every post in it. So I started to get a crazy plan: what if I read 推し短歌入門 and learned the basics of writing tanka before her show, then wrote a tanka that was inspired by her produce show and shared it on twitter where there’s a strong chance she will see my poem? I feel like it might make her day to see her own wrestling work inspire someone to write tanka, so I really want to try it. The only problem is that I have a whole lot on my plate reading-wise right now, because TJPW is about to be in the middle of an extremely busy period, so there will be a big show that I’ll have to translate next week, and then their show in America, which will likely include a press conference that I will also have to translate, and I’ll be watching a whole bunch of other shows on top of all of that. Oh and also I still have yet to have actually finished reading a proper book in Japanese (just manga and some digital text and a few books with a lot of English in them), so this one would be my very first finished Japanese book, and it’s substantially harder than everything else I’ve read. And not to mention I’ll be attempting to compose poems in a language I’m not at all fluent in. What could possibly go wrong? The book is a little less than 90k characters total, and I started it a few days ago, so I have to read it at roughly a rate of 3k characters a day to keep up. This is fine when I have no translation workload. It’s substantially harder when I do. So far, I’m doing an okay job keeping up, but the real busy days will be the end of March and the first week of April, so I’m hoping to get a bit ahead now while I still can in case I fall behind then. As of right now, I have read 18k/90k characters! I am not sure how often I’ll post updates in here, but it definitely won’t be every day, haha. My deadline is April 19, so I should be done reading the book before the challenge ends. I’m just about done reading part 1, and just wrote my very first tanka. Here it is: 半時間あなたと俺のにらみ合い空き会場を照らす火花だ (Inspired by this)
