slow start but i did get there in the end, doing a bit of relife vol 3 and another ‘episode’ in the bakumatsu book. instead of articles, from now on i’m going to do the reading texts from this textbook instead. it’s the only thing it’s really useful to me for so i might as well make the most of it
I caught a cold, so it is now a bit more difficult to study. But how glad I am the I have it now, not a week later!
Mock grammar tests, 1h39m
Again 12/19 for grammar, plus did a bunch of star questions. Also did vocab part, it was not pretty, but realistic (8/25). Nothing new, my hope is to get high score on listening and reading parts, otherwise I’m doomed.
I started reading late, so just a tiny read. Also learned (from wikipedia) that the famous mangaka 手塚治虫 liked bugs so much that he added the 虫 in his name. Good fun fact.
Btw, do you happen to have the answer to this question in particular?
歯車
Completed chapter four and read just over half of five.
That leaves the rest of five and the final chapter for tomorrow. Should be able to get that read as chapter six looks pretty short, though, tbh, my enthusiasm for finishing this one isn’t very high.
I’ve enjoyed the rest of Akutagawa’s works I’ve read so far, some more than others, but they were all interesting to read at least… this one, not so much, I think I just don’t like this style of writing as I had a similar opinion about the second half of I am a Cat by Soseki, I just find it way too meandering with little going on for my taste.
Don’t worry, Makoto is struggling with comprehension at that point too - he’s using dialect. Often, in the next panel someone will “translate” him for the benefit of Makoto and the general reader.
I read it once and try to understand it. If I don’t understand it and a translation into standard Japanese is provided (as it often is in Flying Witch), I read that and then try to use it to parse the dialect. If that fails, I move on. One day when my standard Japanese is fabulous, I’ll work on dialect, but not now. Maybe if I lived in that area of Japan, I’d put the work in, but right now I need to prioritise other Japanese skills.
Got 14/19 for grammar twice, I’m happy. I hope it means that this couple of weeks of cramming is paying off. Vocab was also not bad this time, I’ll stop wasting time on it. I won’t become better anyway. I just wanted to see what score I could have if I did the whole language knowledge section.
