SR Akiko’s American Foreign Exchange (3 episodes) SR Nutshell Grammar (1 episode) Level 2 Tadoku free graded reader*
Today’s reader was a folktale from the Amazon about the origins of the water lily, Victoria Regia - a welcome respite from the “perils of being late” tales.
Just a little manga here and there with a chapter of スーパーの裏で and Shirokuma. So far スーパー is a pretty chill read with the vocab sheet. I also like reading the old book club threads. Read ahead 1 chapter no lookups for Goosebumps. This week has been pretty busy outside of work, so my paperback reads suffered. Looking forward to more hobby time this coming week.
It’s really not too bad so far, it’s less text-dense than Conan but the peppering of tough vocab has me pausing for a look-up every few panels. I’d probably be suffering if I tried to read this in the physical edition rather than handily on the same screen as Jisho, though The first 10 pages are definitely the most difficult, I think I was looking up at least one word per dialogue bubble at the start. I distinctly remember it being rated L33 when I first added it to my TBR list at the start of the year, which seems more appropriate than the L30 it’s currently rated at. For context, I tried starting ヒーローアカ last December when I was squarely at N3 and it felt nearly impossible.
However, after finally getting used to the terms they use for villain, quirk/quirkless, etc. my reading speed is picking up and I think it’ll be a fun manga. I’ll update my thoughts when I finish it haha
Good evening, Reading Challenge friends! It’s that time of the night again where we all reflect and relax! Today has been a much better day than the past few days for my learning as I’ve been able to go at it all day. I’ve spent about an hour talking with a Native Speaker today, played Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for 3 hours (learned some new words through context), and did some passive and active listening.
Overall has been very progress towards my goals as I’ve been able to speak and convey myself a bit better over this past week in the language. I look forward to more time when I get to study and share much more here with everyone!
Now for the non-study related stuff. Monday of this/last week I had a surprise midterm. Well, actually it was a surprise to me because every other midterm is this upcoming week after the first half of the term ends… I got a 72% on it which is not bad, but I’m down to an 85% in my C++ class lol… Also, been going hard at the gym as usual it’s been great!
Anyways, this upcoming week (tomorrow included), I’m going to be dedicating time to reading more Dungeon Meshi as I desperately try to catch up to the book club lol. My timing has been so bad, but I will do my best!!
As always, best of luck to everyone in their daily reading and in the studies! 頑張るよ!
These graded readers have such cute and fun stories - I’m really liking them! I find it so cool how you can still create interesting stories with such basic japanese. Learning through context is so cool too. I look forward to continuing tomorrow! I’m interested in finding out what level is best for me
just some pixiv over the weekend, plus going over some of the plot sequence from lost judgment from the other day again (lots of talking, want to make sure i actually got it all)
My current reading material is still the カードキャプターさくら ABBC. For this week’s reading, I tried not to refer much on the vocab sheet, unless I need to see the verb’s dictionary form. I found that some vocab/kanji were covered in Lv6-7’s lessons so it was a nice encounter in the wild.
Read pages 18-22 - finished Week #2 and 1-2 pages of Week # 3
Today I finished out volume 3 of 骨ドラゴン. I’m enjoying this series still This also means I’ve completed one of the goals I set out for myself at the start of the year with reading 52 manga volumes this year. So I’ll probably shift more to novels for the next little while with that box ticked, since for one of my other goals, I still have to finish two more novels this year.
I’ll be away next week, so I’m not sure exactly what I’ll read next week. I’ll bring my physical copies of Frieren 5/6 and Bookworm 2 (the full LN, which corresponds to 3 and 4 on the JN), plus obviously I’ll have access to my digital stuff, and my Steam Deck, so I’ll have plenty of choice and we’ll see what I actually get to reading. It’ll probably be a bulk update Saturday either way.
October 12th!
Chapter 4 of ダンジョン飯 today. I’m wondering whether or not to continue if there is an offshoot for this club - I’m really enjoying the book but its a tough read for me and I’m a little overloaded with bookclubs at the moment. I have a few more weeks to decide though
October 13th!
Chaper 2 of カードキャプターさくら, and chapter 192 of シャドーハウス today.
It was a really interesting chaprer of シャドーハウス, so I’m looking forward to reading the next one tomorrow.
I use ttsu reader on my desktop and today I tried reading with a smaller font so there were more characters per line. My reading speed went up from 12k/h to 14k/h. At least for a while [1]. It’s tiring reading fast/full speed for a long time.

Well, all the characters are “monsters” of some kind! And it’s fully voiced and there’s a lot of cool music and… It just looks fun so far. Plus it’s a kinetic novel so no choices, just read and have fun. There’s a full playthrough on YouTube if you want to see what it’s like!
A little more Grisaia on Switch at the cabin, and the rest of the first episode of Kirakira Monstars at home. I didn’t keep track of the character count, but it was long! I’m glad that the next episode is shorter…
I had some free time so it was quite the productive day of Japanese reading! Read ビブリア古書堂の事件手帖2 (66% → 76%) and started the 3rd case of 逆転裁判, played about 30 min.
