A new character appeared, and apparently he has an abnormally high IQ and such photographic memory that he can recite old newspaper articles verbatim, even using obsolete characters in his speech. Hmmmโฆ
And here I was choosing modern books over Aozora to avoid exactly thatโฆ
Content-wise, weโre now taking a trip back in time to the source of ghost stories, identifying common patterns. Fun that Okiku, who I had met through the Wild Ladies book, got a mention. By the way, the book is starting to feel very much like the ๅๆๆใป้ซๆงปๅฝฐ่ฏใฎๆจๅฏ manga I had been reading: Apparently occult phenomena get investigated and turn out to be not occult at all. The resemblance was entirely unintentional on my part. Well, at least so far thereโs only been a minor ็ฉด mentioned
The kana is ใ but it is only used for ใใ.
The two hooks are kana repeaters. The short hook repeats one kana, i.e. the word is ใใ. The longer one repeats more than one kana. Also note that small kana were not invented yet. So the word with the long hook is ใใใผใใใผ.
Thank you! I bow to your superior knowledge!
Didnโt read yesterday because of having finished whatโs our of Mr. ใใญใฆใใซใผ and spending the day at a funeral didnโt make me feel much like working out what to read next. Today I started ใณใณใใไบบ้ which is definitely going to be a stretch but I think in a good way where I donโt have pictures to fall back on to understand which I was absolutely doing when reading manga.
More specifically, itโs hiragana โwiโ: ใ (the katakana version is ใฐ). This is one of the characters that was lost in the post-WW2 spelling reforms because its pronunciation had merged with that of ใ over 800 years previously. The other one is ใ โweโ, pronounced the same as ใ.
I find ๆญดๅฒ็ไปฎๅ้ฃใ is not too hard to read in small doses once you know the basic way it works; the wikipedia โHistorical kana orthographyโ article has a good rundown. The other big one to watch out for is that the sounds ใใใใใ might be written ใฏใฒใตใธใป (it being pre-spelling-reform) โ this might depend whether the book is merely going for pre-reform flavour or actually cared enough to get the details right.
This one looks so much fun to write, I almost wish theyโd kept it. ใ on the other hand looks like it might easily be confused with ใฌ or ใฟ when handwritten. It looked so familiar to me that I stared at it for a good few seconds before deciding that no, I didnโt know what it was.
Thankfully it was only one short article that was written this way, but I found it very annoying because 1) it was totally unexpected and 2) this was someone reciting an article from memory, surely you couldnโt hear the writing, so why torture me like that? (yes I took it more personally than I needed to)
Finished Steel Ball Run 5. Iโm completely undecided if that was a slog to get through or a breeze because the action would go and giant wall of text would be on the next page. XD I canโt say it was bad but it was a test of my motivation to finish the volume by the end of the day. I enjoyed it but Iโm gonna probably be happy to take a break after I finish volume 6. Hopefully I donโt forget everything that happened. Usually they put little refreshers at the beginning, but that was a lot to take in for one volume with each chapter being 60+ pages each. I prefer the 20pg standard. XD
Wtf do you mean the chapters are 60+ pages?!?
February 8
Tried to quickly re-read the first chapter of ใใคใญใฅใผ๏ผ๏ผ but it was denser than expected so I didnโt finish it. Also read some ใใฎๆฌใ็ใ่ ใฏ.
Steel Ball Run has some beefy-ass chapters. Volume 5 is only 4 chapters.
I better be a lot better at reading when I reach that part
Like I said before itโs a lot more action making up the pages with some lore dumps here and there. But youโll probably be ready for it by the time you reach it.

Still keeping a bit busy for reading so far this week.
This reminds me of the French branch of my family tree...
For example (keeping in mind that old records have errors and inconsistencies):
Claude Francoisโs kids included:
- Claude Francoise
- Francois Joseph
- Francoise
Francois Joseph and his wife Jeanne Claudeโs kids included:
- Anne Claude
- Claude Francoise (son)
- Francois Claude (daughter)
- Joseph Claude
- Claude Francois
- Francois
Francois Claude went on to have kids including:
- Claude Joseph
- Francoise Francois
(By then, my branch of the tree moved from France to Ohio, in the United States, and discovered variety in naming their kids.)

Day 40, 9th of February
Feeling a lot better, so letโs try and get back into it. Todayโs page is about our two friends finding some lodging. They stop by the place the old man from last time told the about. They agree to stay at this place for this night; but first, they want some drinks!

iโฆmeant to do this earlier. oops. granblue distracted me. anyway, made some headway into shimanami tasogare vol 4 (last one!!!) but found this one a little harder going than the last ones? some combination of that guy speaking in thick okinawa-ben in the first chapter putting me off and some conversations that were a bit harder to follow than i was expecting. but! iโm enjoying it, so itโs all good!
