When I submitted a proxy request on CDJapan for サマーサイダー, it said it could take up to a week, so I wasn’t expecting anything until like at least Wednesday, but I woke up today to an email saying it was available! Just in time to still make use of their double extra points promotion, too. Well, some of the items I ordered are on backorder so it probably won’t be here for another few weeks; I’m gonna try to finish a couple books before then so I can feel less guilty about starting サマーサイダー as soon as I get it.

(I typed this up this morning expecting to finish この本を盗む者は tomorrow, but I already finished it! I think next I’m gonna try to finish 透き通った風が吹いて, though there’s also 夢十夜, even if I don’t read the other stories in the volume and save them for another time.)

I also read a bit more of 花束は毒 this morning and it continues to slowly plod along. I’m giving it 20-30 minutes a day now so I expect I’ll finish it sometime next week as there’s not that much left of it. I kind of burnt out on Anki again so my anki time is now ‘personal book choice’ time.

Huh, this is the first time I’ve had CDJapan email me an item availability update, especially when it was just informing me that they would take 1-3 weeks to come available, which is exactly what the site said before/when I ordered them. I was afraid they’d say they weren’t available after all. • 7 pages of 2.43, leaving off on pg 204. The part where everything starts going wrong! I’ve watched the episode that this subchapter is part of I have no idea how many times, but it’s still so exciting. Ah, I should rewatch soon, even just this ep. It’s the best one.

• スカスカ(.) = (on-mim) insubstantial; without mass; hollow / smoothly
• ハチマキ = headband = 鉢巻(はちま)き. I have never thought of a head as a bowl (鉢(はち)), which apparently can mean so (鉢(はち) = skull cap, 頭蓋骨(ずがいこつ)).
• はてしない = boundless = 果(は)てし無(な)い
• とんだ = absurd; unthinkable / terrible. Attached to 災難(さいなん) (= misfortune; accident) in context. (「飛(と)んだ」で、飛び離れている意か)
• ほざく = to babble. I think of 吠(ほ)える + 裂(さ)く.
• なじる = to tell off; to reproach; to press questions = 詰(なじ)る
• 見(み)え見(み)え = obvious at a glance. So, 見(み)える. Compare with 見(み)る見(み)る (= before one’s eyes; very moment) from the other day.
• 孕(はら)む = to be filled with (e.g. grudge). It also means being pregnant (containing a child).
• 現(うつ)し世(よ) = this present world. Has Furigana, and no Okurigana in the middle.
  • 夢現(ゆめうつつ) = in-between dream and reality. Has Furigana.
  • Maybe the 現(うつつ) part shares root with 映(うつ)す?
• 位相(いそう) = phase (of a wave)
• 羽交(はが)い締(じ)め = crossing arms behind someone’s back, a move. 羽交(はが)い is two wings of a bird folding together.
• 輾転反側(てんてんはんそく) = tossing and turning in bed. Has Furigana. Looks like foul (反則(はんそく)) turning (転々(てんてん))? Well, 反側(はんそく) is also valid by itself.
• ブリキ缶(かん) = tin can. 錻力(ぶりき) (a Dutch loanword, represented by Kokuji) appears to be a tin plate (flattened tin), but the actual tin mineral (Sn) is 錫(すず).
• 藍染(あいぞ)め = indigo dye
• 八面六臂(はちめんろっぴ) = 8 faces and 6 arms; competent in all fields. The last Kanji is for upper arm or elbow (臂(ひじ)).

Now I’m halfway :3 Sometimes my mind starts thinking about other things while my eyes and inner voice are still reading the book, then I’ll have to reread because my attention was elsewhere. Was a bit easier to notice today and then continue reading.

I was reading some 久保さんは僕を許さない (kubo wont let me be invisible) today in english, and noticed that some of the chapters have these short poem-y things on the title pages. Decided to try looking at them in japanese, since poetry usually doesn’t translate very well (imo), and I really enjoyed this one from chapter 24:

新恋はレモンの味がするらしい
私はまだ、シャンプーと消臭剤の香りしかしらない
