Grammar off-topic

That sounds good! I did formal grammar study in the past until about 1/3 of Tobira (ish), but after that I’ve been getting all my grammar from immersion. I thought it was about time I actually read up on grammar properly again because while I am learning a lot of grammar just consuming things, I also like to understand why things are built the way they are, I feel like it gives me a bit more nuance and understanding of it as a whole.

I’m at a point where I can thankfully consult native resources at long last and a few months back I got the Japanese version of 日本語文型辞典 (Handbook of Japanese Grammar Patterns), it’s what I use when I encounter something I’d like to consult and it’s been great so far, but at the same time it’s not a resource I would use like an ordered guide or a textbook, so that’s why I thought Imabi would be good for that because it has a huge amount of content ordered by language knowledge. There is still a lot I don’t know and would like to learn in a more structured manner, especially in the advanced and classical sections because for some reason the content I’m interested in tends to use a fair amount of that (looking at you, fantasy RPGs and so on) :joy: .

Well, let´s try this again. Last time the year started and I went to the hospital for surgery almost immediatly which made me miss some days and as always, when I miss a day on something I want to do daily my motivation drops to rock bottom and it´s super hard to get back on track. Also failed on the part where I wanted to finish some stuff before I bought more, at least I will never have to worry about a lack of reading material.

I will once again join this challenge. My backlog is still gigantic but it is slowly decreasing. There is enough to read for the next ten challenges. :joy:

This challenge I will probably play more video games and visual novels so you can expect me posting lots of cute pictures.

I’ll be tackling my 読解 textbook for the JLPT N2 exam through this challenge!

It’s not very sexy reading material, but checking the box each day and sharing new words and grammar with you all here will be so much more fulfilling than doing it by my lonesome. :durtle_noice:

I’m not a frequent poster but I would definitely like to keep up with this challenge. Seems like everyone is motivated

Looking at taking the N3 end of this year. I have been learning for around 2 years.

Hello everyone!! I’m so excited to be back :sparkles: Thank you so much for hosting @windupbird

I’m excited I won’t be the only one working on study materials. Also, mad respect to everyone coming from the winter reading challenge.

This is literally my favourite group/thread/event in all of the WK forums :sob: Everyone is always so kind, and it’s wildly encouraging to see everyone checking in each day!

:cherry_blossom: Wishing you all the best of luck in getting a check in each day :cherry_blossom:

Gonna join again. March has been great so far. Been doing a lot more than previously and more consistent, too. Want to keep that up at least.

Currently reading 僕が愛したすべての君へ with the book club and 水たまりで息をする which I wanted to finish by the end of march but I’ve been listening/watching a bit more so that took away some time. Hope I’ll finish within the first week of april.

Currently no manga, haven’t decided yet which one to read, but I’m kind of I’m trying to read more novels anyway so might try to focus on that more.

This is my first time joining any WK challenge or book club while it’s actually happening, so I’m excited! よろしく!

Methodology

Instead of going cover-to-cover on one title at a time, I’m going to read as much of whatever takes my fancy that day. My learning philosophy has always been to follow my nose, so I’m going to do that in this challenge too. Hopefully this strategy will help me stay consistent and avoid burnout!

Chainsaw Man is the only title I’m not reading in order, since I have physical copies of the manga and I enjoy being able to jump around. Other than that, I’m plodding a page at a time

This year, I plan to finish at least one (non-book-club) novel every challenge, which, as I’m reading through all three months before the next starts, should be more than doable. Last challenge, I finished two, one which I’d started with a book club but decided to read on my own, and one which I’d started last year.

The novels I’m reading on my own that I already have started going into this challenge are:
・空への助走 福蜂工業高校運動部 by 壁井ユカコ
・ステージ・オブ・ザ・グラウンド by 蒼山サぐ
・青春サプリ。自分がここにいる理由
・透き通った風が吹いて by あさのあつこ

Ideally, I’d like to finish at least one of those during these three months, regardless of whether I finish any others.

The other novels I have started/start during the challenge:
・おばちゃんたちのいるところ by 松田青子 (book club)
・夜カフェ4 by 倉橋燿子 (book club)
・四畳半神話大系 by 森見登美彦 (book club)
・サマーサイダー by 壁井ユカコ
・花馨る雨の名を by 千島千鳥
・ステップファザー・ステップ by 宮部みゆき
・2.43 清陰高校男子バレー部 代表決定戦編② by 壁井ユカコ

I had 風が強く吹いている on here last challenge, but as I didn’t get very far before getting distracted and with there being a possibility of a club forming for it, I’ve decided to hold off on it.

I’m also reading 夢十夜 with that club, but as I’m only planning on reading 夢十夜 itself and not also the other stories included in the 海王社文庫 edition just yet, I’m not including it here as I did with the other short story collections.

I have this goal for myself already, but having the accountability will probably help me actually achieve it! I have a lot of free time at work, so I try to use that time to get through all the NHKEasy articles and 10 pages of reading. I barely passed the N3 in December and I want to go for the N2 this December. Reading speed was very helpful for the N3(finished the reading section 25min early and got to check everything) and I’ve heard it is even more important for the N2, so I’m trying to get as much practice in as I can. However, I should also probably study in a way that isn’t reading, but that’s besides the point XD.

Yesterday was a long day of hiking, car rides, and hanging out with friends. Left home at 6am and got home at nearly 11pm, but I still managed to get a couple pages of the hiking manga(shoved it in my bag because it was thematically appropriate lol) in while eating dinner at Sukiya (I am obsessed with their pudding these days). Technically speaking I read Japanese all the time since I live here and I need to for like road signs and stuff, so I’m going to limit myself to only books for this challenge XD.

April 3rd

Had a half day at work to get a bunch of reading done. Read 4 NHKEasy articles and pages 146-162 of Chamber of Secrets. Today is another day at work with little to do, so more reading time!

April 4th

Full day at work without much actual work to do, so I was reading throughout various meetings. Read pages 162-176 of Chamber of Secrets and four NHKEasy articles. I also translated the school lunch menu for the month and read the school lunch newsletter (definitely not 100% on the comprehension of that though).

Golden Week (May 3rd-7th)

While I did bring a book with me on vacation, I did zero reading. Please enjoy emojis to represent what I did those days. Nagano prefecture is AMAZING and I highly recommend everyone go check it out. I had a ton of fun and learned some new words: 新鮮(fresh)、コケ(moss)、内堀(inner moat)、外堀(outer moat).

Ooh I love the idea of marking each day with what you read, it reminds me of all the fancy notion database things people do. Hope you don’t mind me stealing this if you do figure out how to do it :bowing_woman:t2:

@queenofthegods and @hanpt2, the way I do it is that I replace with the emoji I use for what I read. To make the calendar neater before we start, I replace all with :white_medium_square:. So it becomes changing the squares to the right emoji(s).

So right now April looks like this for me:

And to show what it looks like when it starts getting filled in (from my fall challenge last year):

(There is also a div for each weekday (on the title row and nowhere else) to make it centered in its column, but that isn’t necessary.)

You can also center columns by placing a colon at the appropriate spot in the table’s second row:

To the Left In the Center To the Right
:arrow_backward: :arrow_up_down: :arrow_forward:

is created by

|To the Left|In the Center|To the Right|
| :- | :-: | -: |
| :arrow_backward: | :arrow_up_down: | :arrow_forward:|

Cool. I didn’t know. I stole those divs from you last summer/fall. :joy:

At least I’m pretty sure I didn’t come up with that solution myself, I just freely copied from your study log when I switched over to this format. ^^

Aaaah, my fault, sorry! Now I get what you mean. If you want to have the columns left-aligned (because of the numbers) but the title centered, then you need the div :+1:

The colons in the second row will left-align/center/right-align the whole column (title and contents) in the same way.
