Race to Your Goal! December 2020 JLPT

Level 10, woo!

Hi folks, first time posting here although I’ve had myself on the leaderboard for a few levels. Let’s get there in December!!

I tried JLPT level 2 questions online for the first time yesterday. What a miserable failure. I don’t know enough kanji at this point to know if I would understand the grammar. But, like the moon coming out from a cloud, as I progress in my levels everything will become clear… I think.

And reached level 23, 7 days and nine hours. Feel like I’m going to need to slow down soon.

18 to 19 in 20 days, 14 hours. By far my slowest level, but better slow and steady than nothing, i guess
I hope I can get back to the 10 - 12 days range.

I felt the same… level 21-22 were much harder than the levels before (it seems Death wasn’t such a bad name after all), maybe because they lacked easy, single kanji and common vocabulary (stuff like 命) … or maybe because they were more abstract. The whole quarantine situation doesn’t help, it disrupts our habits and puts us in a bad mood…
I’ll try doing more and shorter sessions before I decide to actually slow down though.

Although it could also be the fact that I added Anki (kana deck), maybe I’m trying to chew too much

Wow, JLPT 2 is a lot
I think I’ll try some N5 mock tests / questions and then N4 just to build some confidence with the test. (I’m aiming at N3) After some reading I’ll see if N3 is really possible so soon. Do you live in Japan?

I do live in Japan, yes. I’ve been learning Japanese mostly verbally off and on for over twenty years, but never read or wrote much, so my Wanikani level is an accurate display of how much kanji I know, but I have some confidence in my grammar.

Well that explains why you went for the N2 tests.

If kanji is the main problem, as long as you have time, you can study more kanji words than those Wanikani offers with Torii (Wanikani Mode) or Hinekidori’s Anki 10k deck (you can find it in the forums). You may already know a lot of them so it would be just a matter of connecting words you know with the kanji.

Anyway, nice to have you on the race!

Hi, my name is Pokewaii and I hope it’s okay that I added myself!

I’m currently 22 years old and have been learning Japanese since I was 14. I’ve been using Wanikani since I was 18. Wanikani is the only app I’ve ever really used to learn Japanese, and it’s done wonders for my kanji skill.

I studied abroad in Japan last year for about 8 months, and by the end of it I was really burnt out due to Japanese attitudes toward foreigners, my own mental health, etc., so I was ready to give up on Japanese. I passed the JLPT N2 this past year and told myself that after that I would be done with Japanese, because I felt it had only caused me more stress than happiness. Now, sitting bored in self quarantine, I’ve been rewatching Kimi ni Todoke, which was one of the first animes I fell in love with when I was a kid. It’s making me feel really nostalgic, and excited about Japanese again, so I decided to log into Wanikani and do my stack of 1200 reviews that have been sitting for the last month. Here’s to continuing my journey here and hopefully finally making it to level 60!

Thank you!! がんばります!

My sympathies… It happens a lot here :frowning: I think the way I’ve been able to avoid that for the most part has been by having a family connection. My daughter has friends over a lot, and we hang out with their parents eating and drinking and doing other community activities. I feel like I’m a part of the community, so the negative stuff rolls off my back a lot easier.

Anyways, let’s work hard together!

Yo, Level 9! I really thought about taking it easy for level 8 but in the end was able to do it in 7 days 20 hours. And my reward? A huge pile of lessons. Better get started on those right away!

If it makes you feel any better, I always do terribly on those grammar quizzes, but did fine on the actual JLPT N2 last December. I was level 51 then. By this year December you’ll be a lot closer to knowing all the kanji. July jlpt will probably not happen, anyway!

Hi everyone. I just added myself to the list. Hope I didn’t edit the wiki incorrectly. That would have been a bummer. I have been using WK since last year July and I just reached level 11. I am planning to take the N5, but I haven’t been studying grammar… It is kinda annoying because I am studying on my own, and I get frustrated with it so often. I hope by joining this thread (this post?) I will be more motivated to keep track of my progress! Let’s work together on this.

I lost some momentum to learn when my trip in March was canceled. But, hopefully our trip in June will stay on so I’m back to learning! Thanks for the accountability here, friends!

Never ever ever do any reviews while drunk.
Edit: Or demo the reviews to someone, or let someone else try them.

Level 8 in 7 days 20 hours! Fastest since level 1. Could be faster if not for that one kanji. My error rate started to go a bit up though since I’m also trying to keep up with the vocabulary. I will try to be more chill this time.

I’m never superdrunk, but in my experience, reviews while tired are worse!

Level Up!

L30 in 7 days 16 hours. (Do we count this as half way? Yay!)

Finally got around to leveling up! My slowest level yet, sitting at 18 days 21 hours.

After returning from my trip to Japan, I’ve been a lot less strict on my study habits. I still do all of my reviews in WK/Bunpro/Torii every day, but I haven’t been adding as much new into my system since I’ve come back. I think I’ll return to about an 8-day pace in WK but we’ll see how I do in my other study areas as I begin to adjust to online college classes. So far the new school structure has been killer and is taking a majority of my focus >_>

After getting through a few fast levels, this sucks as someone who always goes for 0/0:

On typical level-up days before hitting the fast levels, I’d usually have ~350 reviews total for that day.

Since levels 50-60 are all fast levels, I guess I can expect this twice a week for the next ~5 weeks…

Wanted to write a bit about my progress for some reason.

Using Wanikani has helped me at work a lot as I can finally recognise some of the basic expressions in tedious powerpoint presentations. I feel superhappy. I do a lot of behaviour change related things (行動変容) to smartphone addiction (スマホ依存), so seeing the lessons pop up for 行動 and 存 recently made me appreciate the app a lot more. I feel empowered. In a year I assume to be a lot better at reading and writing. I am trying to stay at a slower pace so that I don’t overwhelm myself, but sometimes I feel I want to learn more new words. Been doing great so far and I haven’t had a big slump so far. Many of the kanjis and expressions that pop up now I know from before but there has been a bunch I have never known. Makes it a bit easier to progress but I feel kinda stupid that I stopped for such a long time in 2017. But, what is done is done. I am doing my lessons and I won’t stop until all are burned.

Already managed to reach level 7. I don’t know but the last level felt like a really fast level.

Somehow I passed my japanese test and my teacher said I have a beautiful japanese handwriting. I probably have the worst handwriting ever so everybody is surprised when they see my japanese handwriting. Maybe the calligraphy lessons I had when I was a child are paying off.

Everybody we can do it lets go for that cake.
