So last night i was chatting with my friends and forgot about reviews that I had at 8 PM. It’s currently 6 AM and I was wondering if I turn on vacartion mode now and then turn it off at later tonight, will it keep all my reviews at the same time, or will it still have my reviews set up to be done as if time had just stopped and then restarted? as in if I have a review at 7 AM this morning, turn on vacation mode for 12 hours, and will it be needed to be done at 7 AM or will it needed to be done at 7 PM/ so sorry for not being able to explain things well. hopefully someone understands!
It’s been a long time since I used it, but I believe it just freezes time.
Items will have the info like being Apprentice II, which means an 8h countdown until the review comes back to move to Apprentice III. Those 8 hours will pause with vacation mode, and continue their countdown when vacation mode is turned off.
So if the timings of your reviews are important to your learning flow, you have to be mindful when you turn it off again.
If it’s quite important to you that your reviews come on a set schedule, I wonder whether you could just temporarily change your system time to 8PM yesterday and then do your reviews as if you hadn’t forgotten them?
As I understand things, WK would see the alleged time you completed the reviews and schedule the next stage of each for so many hours into the future from that point (like it always does), but with a “made-up” time that would keep things on track for you.
I’m not sure whether doing that sort of thing is frowned upon, but it feels like it’d be less headache than trying to get the vacation mode timing just right.
No, Wanikani uses their server time, not what your local time is or appears to be. If you fly to a different timezone or daylight saving time starts or ends in your area, your reviews still come at the same intervals as if you hadn’t.
Sorry, I’ve gotten so used to doing my reviews in Smouldering Durtles that I forget it’s probably extremely common for people to do theirs on WK. Anyway, the API endpoint for submitting a review takes an (admittedly optional) timestamp (probably to support “offline mode”), so I have to imagine that the time travel approach could indeed be made to work when using a third-party client.
I also use SD. My experience has been that whenever I do lessons or reviews while offline, SD shows a “fake” next review time. Then later when I sync to the servers, all of the affected items have their times pushed back as if I had done all my reviews at the moment I synced. I’m not sure if that’s because SD doesn’t use the timestamp field, or it’s been deprecated on WK’s end.
SD does use the created_at field, but it’s not immediately obvious what the five-minute threshold is for.
As for why all of your offline reviews synced simultaneously once you were reconnected, I think you probably had the “Delay processing quiz results” setting enabled, which waits until the end of your session and does a batch-sync rather than submitting reviews as you complete them.
I just ran a test and I was mistaken. Offline reviews do work as you’d expect. Offline lessons don’t, however, and will start the 3-4 hour Apprentice 1 timer from the time you sync, regardless of when you actually did the lesson.
