See the forms table at the bottom. These tell you which reading is more common. In this case both readings can be used and I don’t find that either is particularly more common.
There are other symbols sometimes as well (green square, red square, etc) I don’t know all the meanings by heart but you’ll surely find some explanations with a little bit of search.
I don’t think wanikani actively teaches you ちょう as a reading for 朝 in any vocabulary at the moment, thats probably why they decided for よくあさ as reading. I don’t know if よくちょう is on some kind of hidden allow list, but if not I agree with you it should be added
(Ps. Would probably be even better to add some ちょう readings like 朝食 ;))
Edit: scratch that , I just saw 朝刊 so they do teach the reading. It’s just at a later level.
Yeah I agree, purely from immersing I have found that vocabulary using the ちょう reading is not super frequent, but definitely not absent. I reckoned it’d be something that would be taught here as well but then again if we look at a lot of words using ちょう they are very historical and outdated. (Dynasty, imperial court and the likes)
But assuming what yomitan is saying is correct if the reading is just as frequent that’d be awesome if they add it as an option because if we look at 翌年 as an example, they added both readings (よくねん・よくとし) but it’s very clear that よくねん is more frequent. So then, why?
Good question. Maybe writing them an E-Mail (hello@wanikani.com) will get you a faster answer, and maybe they add it as an option. Adding it as a user defined reading, you are for sure not making any mistake (as a workaround for now)
