If you don’t mind- can I ask for a little more context about you and your learning journey? Trying to narrow down this question to better fit your needs. Quick answer assuming you’re a beginner to Japanese all around and are just getting started though;

WaniKani is exclusively a tool for learning Kanji and attached Vocabulary. Any other elements of the language- most notably grammar- will not be present here at all. If you’re not struggling specifcally with the Kanji learning here- you shouldn’t need to seek out another resource to supplment this angle, but if you’re wanting to learn the language at large WaniKani will not be all-encompassing.

I and the rest of us here can point you to resources of all flavors, but it just depends on what exactly you’re searching for.

Glad to have you here and hope you are enjoying WK so far, too

I don’t wanna overwhelm myself with too much at once, but I am trying to move to Japan after I finish college so I wanna learn basics and more, I don’t really like anki just because it didn’t help when I did it so I was trying to find other stuff to learn vocab and grammar thats like WK.

Going to point you to an older response of mine that should have some decent information.

I think specifically you should check out the sections here on Busuu, Bunpro, and Genki Textbooks as they have some great and beginner-friendly grammar lessons and fill in some of WK’s beginner-level vocabulary gaps (such as non-Kanji vocab). Hope this can be valuable and I can gladly answer more questions that might stem from it.

If you want to make your own vocab lists, custom decks from text and general dictionary and slowly ease into reading though examples sentences: https://jpdb.io/ (free with optional patreon support)

If you want an SRS for grammar: https://bunpro.jp (not free / start at 5$/month)

There are also more all-in-ones services like https://marumori.io/ but I’d let a user of the service make a more in-depth presentation :slight_smile:

Have fun and welcome here :slight_smile: !

As for the study direction advice its up to your goals and how long you have to achieve them.

For practical Japanese, I recommend the paid app Iago. It has the kind of phrases with cultural notes that I wish I had known when I first moved to Japan.

As for if you like srs… renshuu.org is free and covers vocab, kanji, grammar, and even production- there are opportunities to make sentences on the website and also speaking, reading, video watching events, and more on the discord.

If you want to pay, and there should be a big sale around Labor Day, try RocketLanguages.com. It covers speaking, culture, writing (to a point in some reinforcement activities), conversation. Lots of review activities, quizzes, etc. I love it , and I know some others here use it as well.
