I’ve asked previously what people’s targets are for “apprentice” and “Guru”, I’m not intimidated by 100+ reviews, but I know going at the pace I’m at will only get more difficult. I’ve been able to complete levels in around 8 days, but thinking maybe every 3 levels take 8 days to review, then proceed. thoughts? ideas?
Personally that sounds like a great idea. I had been going at maximum speed and realized I was slowly retaining less and less review items every time. I recently took a break of 3 weeks, and after that I had significantly better results. I think it will be wise to take a week-long break every so often, and after every 3 levels sounds good to me. In the long run, it will probably actually save you time.
Depending on your schedule/amount of free time, 8 days/level is possible to maintain the whole way through, but it will take a decent amount of time per day. I would say 10 days or less per level is considered “fast”. Also note that some of the later levels can be completed in half the time, but still have around as much vocab so zooming through those really makes reviews pile up.
For those I create my own level-up time, usually i do the previous vocab and radicals first, then after 3.5 days I do all the kanji. It keeps the level-up time at 7 days, but it makes sure that I don’t suddenly get overwhelmed.
I think it’s totally dependent on your lifestyle, ability, and if you’re trying to learn other things too (grammar, hell I’m still working on katakana). I’m already slowing my pace with new lessons as I feel I had little time to study grammar, work full-time and my share of raising a 5 month old 赤ちゃん.
It would be interested to hear some official stats on average leveling but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was far slower than you’d expect.
well I signed up for WK like in January and didn’t actually start until March, so my average was totally wrecked from “go.” hahah Honestly I’ve just been doing every lesson in one day and just letting the SRS do its work. So far I’ve been finishing chapters at around 8 days + some hours, and just keep myself open to making mistakes as much as possible because that’s how I learn. Anyways, cheers!
If you use https://www.wkstats.com:10001/progress/dashboard instead of wkstats, you will also see the median instead of the average, which gives a much better indication of your average level time.
Oh god pep why show me this?? I already suffer enough from my compulsions to game-ify my learning. I’ll be constantly checking my stats now!
Everyone works on their own pace, do not worry about the speed of others. Only compare your current achievements with your past achievements to see how far you’ve grown. You’ll get there in the end anyway
I have largely failed to maintain a consistent pace, and like others said before your pace will depend a lot simply on how much free time you have available, but generally I’ve found that to do an 8 day pace is, quite frankly, a pain in the ass if you have essentially anything else to do for a given day. This summer I’m off of school however so I’ve been pretty comfortable with a 10ish day pace, but during the school year it goes up to 17 days.
But generally I don’t think you’ll 100% know a pace that’s right for you until the workload levels off, which is around level 20 I believe? If someone has that graph they should share it.
I was thinking I’ll be deliberately slowing my pace soon to work on grammar and just practice creating sentences with what I’ve learnt so far. I already am noticing I can recall the meanings of words fine in the wanikani test environment but trying to do so outside of this is far more challenging.
1 level a week right? That’s probably the fastest you can go…
